At least in this area of California deer season starts in 3 weeks!.
SOOOO , I spent the day sighting in at the Swiss Rifle Club .
I got my 1958 vintageSavage 99 model F in .308 with a 70's Lyman All American Perma Center 4x witrh post reticule sighted in for 150 grain Winchester Power point plus ammo for the light stuff. I sighted it in 1 inch high at 100yards , which was very slightly high at 50 yards. I didn't group it at 200 but it hit 200 yard steel chickens dead on! It shot about 2" at 100 off the bench (ideal conditions! :) ).
I sighted my Remington SS Mod 700 .375 H&H (Brown Precision Stock, tuned 2.5 pound trigger , and Vais brake) in with it's 1.75-6X scope up to 6x about 1.5" high at 100 yards with 270 grain Rem Coreloktd. The gun shoots sub MOA rested! It also busted the checkens at 200 all to H double toothpicks! I DID draw an Arizona Elk tag , BUT I will use this on the bigger NorCal muleys also.
Notice I sighted them in for readily available fresh factory ammo! Just a hint for a lot of effort and money for a hunt ;) not to go sour! I DID however sight my .224 Weatherby project in with my 53 grain Barnes Triple shock handloads at a chronographed 3500fps. They print around an inch with the scope at 7x and I sighted these dead on at 100 yards, they look to be 1/2" low at 200yards and group about 1.5" out there! This is my experimental Blacktail deer gun which would be used under 250 yards (more like 90 prolly) that is SUPPOSED to drop them like lightning! :) I just put a set of AO peep sights on myWinchester 94 Wrangler 30-30 and sighted 150 grain Corelokts at 50 yards-off hand got 2-3" groups good enough if one comes around 15-50 yards out when you don't expect it!
SO WHAT ARE YOU'ALL gonna sight in? :neener:

i know for a fact that my 40-50yr old Remington 721 in 30-06 is dead on at 100yds. i may take my Marlin 30-30 to the range to see if my accuracy problems are the result of loose scope mounts or excessive headspace. my PSE "the Beast" bow is a sure thing for the boiler room at 20yds.

Incidently all the guns (except the Wrangler 30-30) I "sighted in" had been with me for years and 'I knew' where they hit! The ALL required slight correction, even the glass stocked ones!
Every guided hunting camp I ever went to required 'sighting in', call it sight and load verifacation! :)

I didn't get drawn for a rifle hunt in Arizona this year but am planning on going to Missouri and WVA hunting. I have worked up a very good 165gr load for my -06 with IMR 4350. The Sierra Gameking is putting up 3/4" groups at 100yds.

My main concentration this year local is bowhunting. Did a few equipment changes and am slinging arrows in the back yard every day. Found 2 nice muley bucks yesterday and one of them is definitely a wall hanger. I can hardly wait till the end of August to get out and take him down.

I'm sure the guides called it that, but that's not what they usually care about. In talking to dozens of guides over the years, they've all said mostly the same thing after they get to know you. The sighting in portion of the hunt is so that they can evaluate YOU, not your rifle. How comfortable are you with your equipment? How much fumbling do you do with the scope, or the other accessories? Do you automatically go to the sandbag, or are you comfortable from field positions? Do you exercise muzzle control, or do you fan it around?

I just reviewed my video from last year's hunt, and saw something I missed before. When I'm getting my gear ready, the guide is watching me. When I'm shooting, the guide is watching me. When I'm looking at the target to see where I shot, the guide is watching me. He never glanced at the target the whole time. After I fired my second round, he intoned, "That'll do. Nice shooting." Never looked at the bullet holes. His real question is, "Is this guy going to get me hurt by being stupid with dangerous equipment, or can I relax and focus on hunting?"

Damn, you're using a .375 H&H for mule deer; but only a .224 Weatherby for blacktails?!?!

Let me guess, your are Robert Ruark and Karamojo Bell. :D J/K Those sound like great rifles esp. the Savage. That's an awesome design in one of the best all-around calibers.

Looks like I'm gonna be heading out to Missouri for the Nov rifle hunt. I have a super duper 30-06 load with 165gr Sierra HPBT and IMR that is putting .5" groups at 100.

As for the bow, its ready to go. Did some changes and now its slinging Gold Tip arrows and 100gr broadheads at 300fps.

I love the anticipation towards hunting season. Gets the blood flowing.

Enjoy the season fellas. I know I will. :D
