Itty Bitty Carry With a Bite or How About a 638 Club?

I scored this pre lock 638 off Gun Broker a couple of months ago. It has become my constant companion and rides in a Don Hume pocket holster loaded with 135 grain +P GDs.

Picked up a NIB 638 at a Ft. Worth gunshow. I haven't had a chance to get to the range yet...... I've also taken care of the Internal lock. A weapon I'm going to trust my life to WILL NOT HAVE A LOCK on it!!

My 638 is without a doubt the sweetest shooting snubby in my small snubby armory...

In fact I bought my pre-lock 638 because the narrow serrated trigger on my pawn shop rescued 49 just wasn't comfortable to shoot after a few rounds. The wider smooth target trigger on the 638 is a tremendous improvement over the earlier types.

Add a set of Crimson Trace Lasergrips on a sweet 638 and I think you have a great personal defense snubby..

Okay - I'll admit - I don't have a humpback......... But I do own a S&W 637 that I bought about 3 months ago. What can I say - I have to have an exposed hammer. To me - it looks best and right. It's been my constant CDW friend (I'll admit - I carried my Glock 22 once to see if I could pull it off....). Anyway - there is no better CDW gun than an Airweight even if the 637 is in the minority here.

Horray!

I am glad I found the Club for my most favorite gun...the Smith "Bodyguard". I have several of these models. Looking forward to conversing with everyone and seeing how you carry your Bodyguard!

I don't suppose anyone's got one of these revolvers AND a P32 or P3AT? I'd love to see a size comparison. I've got a love-hate relationship with my P32 and wouldn't mind switching to a revolver of comparable size/weight.

Anyone?

P32 vs. 638

Definitely no comparison. Size: P32 is smaller, Weight: P32 is lighter, Firepower: 638 wins hands down. (Now here comes the flames...:neener:) As for RELIABILITY, the 638 beats the crap out of the P32. If you like Keltec, that is your priviledge, but I had enough of them after my last Keltec purchase, a PF9. (and yes, I also own a P32) I am sorry, but if a gun is not reliable out of the box, I don't need it or want it. So give me the J-frames. I always have one as my companion. They always go bang and if I have any problems, Smith will even pay for the shipping to and from their warranty dept. You can't beat that!

Well, here's an update: 6/11/07

I still love my S&W Airweight Bodyguard w/CT Lasergrips. But generally when I have the option I chose to carry my Walther P99c/AS.. The 638 is great, and the CT/Lasergrips offer a measure of accuracy in dark that the P99c/AS cannot offer. But the Walther offers a capacity of 10+1 as opposed to 5, is approximately the same size, and can be carried in any situation where you could carry the 638 concealed. I am much more accurate with the Walther too.

Now for those times neither can be hidden successfully I recommend the Seecamp LWS32.... You can carry this sucker almost anyplace, anytime..

Just more options..

By some strange coincidence I picked up a nickel plated pre-lock 49 today. It was just sitting in the consignment area of the gun shop looking lonely, and since I have a better chance of buying a winged pig in CA than an old, apparently seldom used, (no turn marks on the cylinder), pre-lock Smith for $300, I jumped on it.
Can anyone tell me where to get those aluminum grip fillers? - Never mind, I just found this other thread http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=281518
thanks

I found my 49 in a pawn shop in S. Ga. approximately 7-8 years ago.

The story was this same gentleman came in to the pawn shop near the end of each month and pawned the 49 and several other firearms.. After his check arrived the next month he would redeem all of them, and the process would repeat itself again three weeks or so later.

For some unknown reason the previous first of the month this person redeemed all of the pawned firearms but the 49.. Go figure.

Anyway, my wife saw me "lusting" after the pretty little J-frame and said "why don't you adopt that little gun and lets give it a good home".

Gotta love a wife like that!

Best Wishes,

P.S. The "Tyler T-grips" really improve the grip. I like the Barami "hip grips" too, as they make casual cc very simple.

638 club request

:)Hey guys (and gals), got room for one more. Just bought mine last month but haven't gotten around to firing yet. Traded in a Bersa 380 because the J has more bite and is easier to hide. The 380 is a good gun for what it is but I felt I needed something with a better chance of knock-down.:) I'm N Ala

I just got done reading a bunch of the posts in the 642 club, and felt left out because I chose to buy a 638 tonight instead.

I, like the original author of this thread, wanted to have the single action option that the 638 provides without losing the smooth profile of the 642. For me, the "Bodyguard" was the perfect combo

Bud's Gunshop had a really nice price and free shipping. :)

I also ordered a set of Crimson Trace LG-405 grips to go along with my new carry gun. I already know from shooting a few snubbies in my day that laser grips are a must for a gun like this.

Found the best price on those here:

http://www.shooters-resource.com/Me...ode=SROS&Product_Code=LG-405&Category_Code=SW

Anyway... I hope that this thread continues into when I actually receive the gun and can put some rounds through it!

I don't post much around here... Usually only when I have a specific question, but I am excited about finally having a gun small and light enough that I can actually get some use out of my concealed carry permit! ;)

new guy with new gun

bought my first revolver this week, a S&W 638 bodyguard primarily for home land security. i will be firing it very soon at the local range. happy to join this club....

one early question; is it normal for the frame, just under the rear side of the barrel in the wheel area, to be hitting the "ring" in front of the cylinder and reshaping itself? The aluminum alloy frame is sharping to a point. i have only dry fired it in its first week of ownership. Thanks in advance for any advice...

If you are asking if the front of the cylinder should be touching the barrel's forcing cone, the answer in "no". I don't recall the exact acceptable gap width, but I think it's approx. .005" plus/minus.

i am so new that i dont really know what the forcing cone is. my issue is just below the rear of the barrel, i am guessing the cone, where there is a small amount of the aluminum frame below the cone. i cannot see daylight through the area between the cylinder and the barrel or cone. have i confused the situation further? i imagine pics would help if i had some....

I bought my 638 three weeks ago. Can I join too? The best snubby I have owned so far. The only thing I need now is a set of CT grips. Which model of the CT grips do you guys recomend? Also does CT make a set of grips longer than the standard boot grips that come with it?

I have six 638's. It is my favorite and most carried gun. I have tried all the autos but would always return to the 638.

38 or 638 = Then Bodyguard is by far my most favorite revolver! Don't leave home without it!
