I've acted in haste, but have time to back out: help me decide

I stopped by my local hardware store on a whim today. They keep a small gun counter, and mostly sell long guns, but are a Glock dealer and have several pistols on hand as well.

I saw it instantly. A 6" barrel, high polish stainless Smith & Wesson 686+, with a beautiful wooden grip. It's the gun that, unbeknownst to me at the time, I wished I was buying when I bought my Taurus 66.

The pros:

It's beautiful.
The finer finish will be easier to clean.
All my existing accessories for my Taurus will fit it.
A scope mount I bought that I thought would fit my Taurus will fit it.
It's a Smith & Wesson.

The cons:

It's $685.
I'll sell my Taurus ($300 offered) to buy it. (Not sure this is a con, see below)

I've taken from this forum and other, wiser men than me that selling guns in general is ill advised. When I was thinking of selling my Taurus for a Ruger, you guys talked me down with some good points. This one, however, makes sense to me; both the Taurus and the S&W are functionally identical. Both are 6", 7-shot. If I kept the Taurus it would never be used again.

So what do you guys think?

Assuming you have the extra cash I would 100% do that trade up.

That's less selling a gun than improving one.

I would do it mainly for all the reasons you have already stated. Since you wouldn't need or use the Taurus if you bought the Model 686+ outright then it makes perfect sense to trade it on the S&W and have the gun you wanted from the beginning.

Guns are just "things." They're meant to be bought, sold, traded and swapped.

If you want something, I don't see anything wrong with selling something else to get it. It's just a gun. If you wanted a new car, you wouldn't hesitate to sell/trade the old one would you?

If by some chance, you decide you want the first one back, go buy another one just like it. They're not rare or anything.

Now. I'm not telling you TO sell/trade. I'm saying there is nothing "wrong" about doing so if YOU want to.

Done, done, and done.

I don't have the cash on hand this instant, but being a friendly local hardware store, the place does layaways.

It will be worth the wait... Plus I'll have time to load up all my brass without the temptation to go shoot every box I make. =)

Is this a trick question? evil_zps20195143.gif

Whoops I missed that you done did the deed.. Good decision.

I've never met anyone that regretted owning a Smith & Wesson revolver. You won't want to shoot the Taurus after shooting the S&W, so why not sell it? Or keep it to loan to folks that might go to the range with you.

Buy the S&W. It's the BEST production .357 you can get. It's more durable and just as accurate as the Colt Python, gives you an extra shot and keeps its value. And when you're not shooting it, you'll appreciate having it around. Guns are going nowhere but up in price while the value of the dollar is dropping like a rock. Just pretend someone else asked you that question. What would you have said.

Buy the Smith...I have had a 686 for 25yrs...GREAT gun.

Also, it is never " ill advised" to sell a Taurus.

Just stopped by to take a look at the gun again. I figure it's like a car; before buying, look at it a few times, look at it on different days.

Yep, still gonna get it. =)

Don't wait too long to get it just in case someone else sees it, takes a fancy to it, and heads on home with it.

I am of the opinion that one should trade a Taurus for either a S&W or Ruger. I have seen some Taurus revolvers that were good but I have seen more that were very poor. If I could not sell the Taurus outright and had the chance to trade for a S&W 686 I would do it in no time.

No worries of that.

At my joking request, the clerk put my name on the gun and stored it in their safe! They'll hold it until I can start the layaway on Tuesday! =D

Get rid of the POS taurus ASAP and don't look back.
No need for that attitude, now. =/

The Taurus is my first gun, it's served me well and I'll be sad to see it go. Hell, sentimental value is probably the only reason I hesitated for the short period I did.

I regret selling the first handgun I ever bought. I did not regret it until decades later. The regret was not for having sold something that later became valuable or rare, it was regret due to sentiment. I was a young man with no concept of the regrets an old man will someday have. Keep the Taurus, save your pennies to pay off the lay-away on the S&W.

I'm not a huge fan of stainless guns, but I've wanted a blued 586 for many, many years. Finally stumbled across one a couple years ago and jumped on it like a horny chimp. Had to sell off all my silver to get it, but I'm damn glad I did! It's a sweetheart and gorgeous.
