Gotta side with Glock River on this. Sports radio is a rather odd phenomena that has really taken off over the last 10 years. Jim Rome leads the way. He is syndicated on over 200 radio stations across the country, with 2.5 million listeners a day. Most of those listeners are 18 to 34 year old males.
And we shouldn’t worry about the anti-gun sentiment on these radio shows? “Anti-gun” may be a little harsh actually – how about “gun ignorant”? To me, an ignorant person is even more scary than a true anti. They don’t care. They sit back and don’t do anything. They can be influenced too easily by anti gun folks. They are the majority.
Sports radio, for better or worse, gives us insight into how the majority of American men think about guns. Or rather, how they DON’T think about guns. They don’t think about the Second Amendment, they don’t think about self defense, and they certainly don’t think about general gun safety. All they take away from this Plaxico story is that you are going to shoot yourself if you carry.
My neighbor is a former LEO and decided to go into a government administration career. He says he is pro-gun, yet voted for Obama, and said “there isn’t really a need for assault weapons, I don’t care if they are banned”.
I asked him what his definition of an assault weapon was. He had no idea. He couldn’t even begin to define it. But he felt they were bad and no one needed them. That’s ignorance.
And I don’t understand why a love for guns and a love for sports (and sports radio) needs to be mutually exclusive. In fact, I find fans of sports radio no different than folks that spend time reading and posting on gun forums!
