The title says it all. Looking for the best .22 rifle for under $200. If I can stay close to $100, thats even better.

We need much, much more information. This thread reminds me of so many other such threads of late...hit-and-runs.

What do you plan to do:

...target shoot?
...hunt?
...at what range?

What class of .22LR do you prefer a single-shot, a bolt action, a semi-automatic, or a muzzle-loader?

What ammunition can you afford?

I guess unless you can answer these very critical questions, few here will take your post seriously. We are here to assist, but seriously are not able unless you provide more information.

At that price, you're going to have a hard time finding a truly good .22 rifle. Consider socking the money away and saving up for something a little bit better.

ive seen ruger 10/22's going for 200-250.

seems like a good purchase to me.

i have a remington model 597 and it is by no means an elite weapon but its accurate and has numerous armadillo and opossum kills under its belt.

I just bought a brand-new 10/22 for $169 at our local department store, so they can easily be had for <$200.

You might want to wait for the day-after-Christmas sales to pick one up.

dont forget:
1. consider buying a used rifle
2. save a little longer and get what you really want
3. be patient

Before you get a 10-22 Ruger go to www.rimfirecentral.com A 10-22 can be tuned up to be quite accurate. There are a number of after market parts for it. But a tuned up 10-22 may end uo costing as much as a Cooper or Anschultz. While there are tune up parts and info about the 10-22 there is very few tune up parts for other semi auto 22 rimfire rifles..

I think you can find some good 22's for under 200. If you take your time and look a little harder, you can find better 22's for under 200. For an extra 25% of your budget, you could have bought a CZ bolt gun that my friend bought while we were in the pawn shop the other day. Patience will be the best investment with your 200.

For under 100, I would find a model 60. Bought my dad one the other day. Runs like a sewing machine. Looks like a 67 corvette.....:D

Marlin Mod. 60

Given little details on use as stated by others, and your price range requirements I would have to suggest a Marlin Mod. 60 Automatic.

It will fit plinking requirements and small game hunting as well, I have used one for many years squirrell hunting topped with a simmons scope and it has performed well.

I will most definately add that a Model 60 should be cleaned well after each outing and it will be a dependable trooper for a long time. I actually picked mine up in the local trader paper for $60 ! I do not think you can find those deals these days but worth looking in to. I have less than $150 in mine with the scope which was I believe $39 or $49.

You might even get lucky and find a bolt gun or other good choices if you have a local trading paper. There is some very good suggestions in this thread incl. Ruger 10/22. Marlin just a bit more accurate if you are going to hunt, but am not really knocking the 10/22!

Good Luck and happy shooting!

For under $200 you can get a classic like the Marlin 60, or something newer and more modern like the Remington 597.

I have the Remington 597 and it is a good 22lr. In central florida I could not find the Ruger 10/22 for under $200 for the life of me. I am not sure I would have even wanted the Ruger as the Remington 597 does everything I wanted my 22lr to do.

All 3 rifles are good, so you won't go wrong no matter which way you choose.

Merry Christmas! :)

Ruger 10/22 can't go wrong plus there are so many extra goodies for it you'll have all your Christmas and birthday presents already to list. I bought my basic 10/22 for $169 at Cabela's but most all of the sporting goods dealers sell for about the same price.

I recently paid $140 for a like new looking Ruger 10/22; and $120 for a Marlin Model 60. If you don't mind used, then watch for decent deals, inspect carefully, and purchase wisely. You'll do well, grasshopper. :D

The nice thing about a 10/22 is that it'll come in way under the $200 if you shop around. And as you get fund-age you can build it up, making it a better rifle as your situation allows, instead of waiting for something 'better'. Only the AR has more accessories available (and heck, you can make your 10/22 take a lot of AR accessories if you want). Will it be as accurate as a target bolt rifle? No. But other than bragging right and competition, I'll submit that there's not many practical applications of a .22LR that you can't make a 10/22 do to at least an acceptable degree. That versatility makes it the winner IMHO. The Remmie 597 is also nice, but nowhere near the level of aftermarket support.

+1 for Geno's post, no info from the OP, no open of the mouth. I look stupid enough when mine's closed.

What will it be doing, at what distance, what can you carry, does it need a scope for you to do it?

General purpose .22s...

Bolt- Marlin and Savage both make decent ones for the price range
Semi- Marlin Mdl 60 or Ruger 10/22 (lightly used)
Lever- you might be able to get a Henry for around that price

Good clean used all the way :) Weatherby even made a .22 See if you can find a good used rifle that fits your shoulder, easy to get cheek weld, and easy to work. Pull them all off the used rack and try one at a time. You'll see what's the best fit. Once you have that info, then search for a new model if you want :)
