I came up high bidder on a beautiful VKT 1941 M-39 Finnish Mosin this afternoon on Gunbroker. I finally found MY Mosin- after looking real hard at all sorts of Russian refurb 91/30's. After finding stuff I didn't like with all of them (I was being VERY picky), ended up finding this Finn on Gunbroker.

Sellers Description:
Finnish Nagant model 39, 7.62x54, dated 1941. Overall rifle is in very good condition, 85% or better blue, 0 rust or pitting. Bore is sharp and shiney, crown is very good. Bolt functions very smooth, even after extended firing. I am no expert but I can hit the 200yrd gong regularly with this. Wood is in very good condition with nice grain, and free of cracks or damage. Numbers match bolt, barrel, and receiver. Lower plate has same numbers just not in the same sequence. If you are gonna buy a Nagant this is the one you want.

He said that the 200 yard steel target was manhole cover sized. He also mentioned that at 100 yards, he could reliably pulverize bowling pins. He also mentioned that the trigger break is crisp, and that the take-up is smoothe.

Nice! I love the stock.

The M39 is a way better rifle than the 91/30. I could definitely see it smashing bowling pins at 100. All three of mine shoot well enough.

Try that 18" diameter steel @ 300 yards. My M39's hit 95% of the time at that range (with their respective preferred loads) - iron sights only.

Can be done off a bench, prone, sitting, or standing. Level of difficulty at the high end standing, but it can be done. M39's are outstanding rifles.

Once you get used to the M39 Mosin and have a little trigger time under your belt with it, bowling pins @ 100 yards will seem like childs play.


Word of advise* Be prepared to experiment with many ammo types (surplus and new factory) in search of what your particular rifle shoots the best.

My 91/30 hits the 300 yard gong with no problem. I haven't got my M39 out there yet.

Agreed. Once you own an M39, you'll realize all Soviet Mosins are worthy of immediate sale (or long term storage). The Finns certainly improved, if not perfected, the Mosin Nagant rifle.

Congratulate mr mp510. You have the gun much more than Mosin Nagant. VKT means Valtion Kivääritehdas: Rifle Faktory of State. Only boltsystem made in Russia. Here in Finland it is "Ukko Pekka". (old guy) because there was president Pher(Pekka) Edvin Swinhuvud. He was champion shooter. Peoples likes him very much. Microsight scale is in metres. (yard = 0,9144 m.). "D" means chambered for D-166 bullet. Magazin with "HV" means no trouble with rimmed cases. When I was liable for military service in our army, shooting makes with rifle at 300metres. Welcome KI.W. Please feel free to share your shooting experiences from Finland. I have both a VKT and Sako M39, I like them both very much. Have you any experience with the Valmet M62/M76s? They seem very much like the "Cadillac" of AKs.

Don't hold me to this but as an added bonus I do believe that the M39's with Sako barrels are in .308 in. dia. .................. not .311 in. dia.
 
Congrats on the new M39 - looks like a nice one.

Couple of things for you to remember:

1) Most likely you'll be shooting corrosive ammo...there are many threads on how folks take care of this (I use windex followed by a normal cleaning) - but make sure you clean the salts out or you'll have a nasty surprise in the barrel.

2) Be careful when taking the gun apart - many times the Finns used shims and the shims will fall out if you're not expecting them to be there.

3) Clean the chamber really well initially - you reduce the amount of "sticky bolt" if the chamber is clean. On a side note, you can normally tell a Mosin shooter because we all have some type of small mallet that we take to the range :)

4) When referring to your rifle, you serial number is NOT 86432 ;)

5) Check out www.7.62x54r.com for a tremendous amount of Mosin info

www.wideners.com seems to have the cheapest ammo right now 1950's Bulgarian heavy ball for $45 per tin of 300 plus shipping.

Good find. You'll like your M39. Accurate as can be and they have a great 2 stage trigger. Not quite as good as the triggers on the Swiss K31s, but close.

If its anything like mine, with surplus ammo, a manhole cover at 200 yards shouldn't even be a challenge. A dinner or pie plate at 200 would be a more reasonable target.

As nice as that stock looks now, some mineral spirits and a scotchbrite pad will clean that dirt off the buttstock and make it look even better.

If you suffered through the 91/30s, you'll feel like you're in heaven when you finally get hands on your M39. KI.W. will tell you that.

You know years ago i had real nice M39 also. I got rid of it but if I had known then what I know now I would have kept it. Could never get it to shoot well with my best hand loads. I was using .308 bullets. DAH. Probably nothing wrong with it.
 
M39's run about .310" They can do quite well with Lapua's special D166 bullets. Midway usually has them, but they're listed under 308" bullets.
 
Sorry Jagdpanzer 347. I have no "AKs" I like boltactions because I am allready 68 year old. I load my self all cartridges for my rifles, pistols and revolvers. I don´t like to shoot surplus things. - Lencal, You are sniper. What are You thinking this sniper. He was number one in Finland. http://mosinnagant.net/finland/simohayha.
