I'm growing very fond of the "ivory" grips on stainless blackahwks. I think I'd like to pickup two sets . One for my 6.5" single six one for the 4 5/8 blackhawk hawk. I had a set of eagle gunfighters on both and decided that they where too thin for my liking and not a smooth/big enough bottom bevel. So I'm giving them to my dad for his guns.

As of now both the single six and the blackhawk wear the factory laminate and factory walnut grips . I like the feel of the factory grips for the most part but wish they were a little thicker at the top. I do like the big bevel on the bottom because it allows for a comfortable pinky under hold.

So far from the pics I've seen the hogue cowboys fit the bill. I'd like the micarta instead of the plastic ones, but with a little one on the way I have to limit my spending .100 bucks for one set of grips is too steep right now.

I've been eyeing the Altamont bonded ivory grips, but can find any info on how thick they are. If someone could provide input (especially a rear photo of them) I'd appreciate that very much. Since they're only 28 bucks a set and would fill the roll untill I get some custom micartas someday. Thanks. Other suggestions appreciated as well.

My two favorite sources for ivory-like grips were Tru-Ivory by Bar-S Grips and Holly Wood by Private's Custom Grips. Unfortunately I haven't seen or heard of any more grips being available from Bar-S and the gentleman who made Private's grips has retired from the business.

I've been on the tru-ivory site, but there where no pictures or anything, have seen the name come up a few times, your grips look fantastic. How are their prices?

Is private customs the same as cary-c's grips? I've seen both names come up and recommended alot in my google searches as well and it appears Cary c is retired too.

Dunno what these are, but they fit and feel good. Plus I like showing my BH off!

I dont have any pics of my stainless blackhawk with the ivory grips, but here is the blued version. I would try the altamont grips or the holly grips.( Mine are off brand, and dont fit perfectly. )

The Tru-Ivory Bar-S website use to be much more extensive and informative. I really don't think they're in business any more or else they're keeping it a well kept secret. I actually bought my Tru-Ivory grips (I think the bright white ones I have on my Vaquero were called "New Ivory"), from Brownells or Midway and they were fairly pricey back then.

Private's Custom Grips was not the same as Cary-C Grips though as you say they're both retired nowadays from the grip making business.

I do have an inexpensive set of faux ivory grips on my Beretta Stampede. Not the greatest fitting grips (had to do some filing and sanding to them to get them in place), but I have always had a "thing" for how a deep, dark blued gun looks with white/ivory grips!

You're right...it is too bad because he did such fine work (my grips looked great and fit my Flattop Blackhawk perfectly), and for a very reasonable price!

I love the look of imitation ivory grips & I'm hoping I can find some for my Ruger Vaqueros as soon as I have a couple of extra bucks. What are they going for these days? The last time I looked they were pricey.

The simulated ivory grips on the Boone Trading Company website look (and are priced), a lot like the ones I have on my Beretta Stampede. Altamont and Hogue grips are nice but can be a bit pricey. You might also want to check out the simulated ivory grips from Eagle and Ajax.

The eagles do look nice but are a bit pricey. My issue with alot of these grips is, you Google search them, and you get a fair amount of good images of the guns on their side looking nice and all. But no one posts a picture from the rear showing profiles of said grips which is kinda the most important part of how they feel in the hand.

I did email Boone trading to serve if he had any other pics.

Maybe try emailing some of these companies and asking them to measure the grips for you. I remember seeing on the Hogue website that they gave the measurements for the width of various Ruger single action revolvers grip frames (1/2" and 7/16"), so you could figure out which grip was right for your gun. If they can measure the grip frames then they should be able to let you know the measurements of their grips.

Patrick Grashorn at Grashorn’s Gunworks specializes in elk antler grips. He can make them smooth if you don’t like the rough bark, and he offers custom fitting as well. Not cheap, but first class work, and he is a nice guy too. Something to be said for natural materials rather than plastic.

Ugh I bet his shop just reeks of burnt bone. I hate the smell of working antler or bone. Awesome when finished though
