I saw a picture of a J. A. Henckels Sod Buster recently, and I suddenly have an overwhelming urge to own one. What I saw was a wood handled Sod Buster patterned knife but with a locking blade. I've done a Google search, but I haven't been able to find anywhere selling any J. A. Henckels pocket knives. Can anyone comment if they are still in the business of making pocket knives, and where I might be able to purchase one (especially an example of the beautiful Sod Buster that I saw)?

Bear in mind "Sodbuster" is a trademarked name from Case. The same pattern knives go by quite a few names such as Mule, Coal miner, etc. I just ordered one from Ag Russell called the Cowboy Pocket Knife http://www.agrussell.com/product.asp?pn=RUS-CX12ER

You can find Case, Klass, Boker, Kissing Crane, Schlieper Eye Brand, Bear and Son, etc but for a Henckel you are going to have to search the secondary market. Keeping an eye on Ebay may be your best bet. If you want wood handles I would suggest the Kissing Crane http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=UCKC35 or German Eye Brand http://www.knivesplus.com/eye-brand-eb-99jr.html

Or you could have Muskrat Man build you one with your choice of wood. http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/aapk_stores/details.php?item=19804&store_id=16 he did this one from wood I supplied him...

Thanks for your help guys!

I really like the wood scales and lockback design of the Henckels version, but I'm not necessarily looking for a Henckels knife. I have nothing against slipjoints, and I have a Yellow/CV Case Sod buster, Jr. myself, but I think the lock looks good, and combined with the wood scales makes it a little different and interesting.

Sounds like you need an Opinel. I have a few, and they're amazing. High carbon steel. Takes and holds and edge really well. They make them in a range of sizes, from nearly microscopic to feet-long.

Henckels no longer makes pocket knoves. If there are any new ones out there, then they are from China.

I've already got a 6, 7 and 8; thanks for the suggestion though.

Well if you like different then how about a Trapbuster? This was made for me by combining two Case Sodbuster Jr's in CV, adding the jigged bone and reshaping the blades.

Locking Sodbuster

MooreMaker does a nice sodbuster:

Here's their small one in yellow bone.

And here's the large one.

And they supposedly still make their locking sodbuster:

This photo is from their home page:

But for some reason, when you click on it, you get a "not found" in their catalog.

ArfinGreebly - Thanks for that! I'm going to try to get in touch with them.

451 Detonics - I saw the trapbuster in another thread recently and thought it was pretty funky - I really like the scales and end springs on it, I had to wipe a little bit of drool off my keyboard when I saw it.

To find the old high quality J.A. Henckels pocket knives you will have to search knife and gun shows and keep an eye out on eBay. The new ones are good but all the Solingen knife makes share designs and they all look alike.

Below are some of the ones I have found over the years.

I have one of those old Henckels single blade (sodbuster style) knives. It's the fourth photo from the bottom in the previous post. I can't tell you how sharp that thing can be except to say that the fellow who sold me one used his to cut 3/8 sheet leather in a single clean pass.... That Henckels so impressed me that I bought two addtional ones as gifts for family members many years ago. I carried mine on duty for 22 years whenever I was in uniform and used it many times as a pure cutting tool. Not sure why that knife cuts so cleanly, it has a fairly thin carbon steel blade but would take and hold an edge like no other knife I've ever owned. I'll take a pic or two and post it in a day or so. Sorry to hear they no longer make them.... The one in the previous post looks almost new, the one I have hasn't looked like that in many years...
