This is a working prototype, fun making it. If I do another one I will make some changes in the design. Probably a long cylinder conversion with firing
pin in the hammer. All I had was a lathe and drill press. It shoots high and to
the left so I need sights yet but it functions as I thought it would. I planned on
lining the barrel but drill drifted off and I had to cut it back to the barrel lug and
fit a new barrel. Thanks for the help

I built it in .32 S&W long for 3 reasons.
1 With .370 dia head size I did not have to machine the teeth away on the cyl.
2 I used the original cylinder and it is proofed for black powder only.
3 I saw a pic. of a 1860 conversion in McDowell's book.
The firing pin is in the conversion ring and is held with a screw up from the
bottom to keep it from turning. It was easier than screwing it to the recoil
shield.

I will bring it if we can get rid of all this snow by then! I am running out of
room to shovel it! When this winter is over I will be well qualified to get a
retirement job of cleaning out barn stalls.

Fun project. That would be good for a gunsmithing student.

A nice recovery on the barrel issue. The new combo looks just fine.

Did you custom make the rear firing pin adapter too? For the cylinder it appears that you just cut down the existing one. Is that right?

I've got a really nice 1860 in .36 which I WAS going to sell. But this one picture of yours has me thinking that I might need to reconsider my options.

Yes it is a spring loaded firing pin hit by the hammer.

I used the original cyl. I machined off the rear of it to get rid of the nipple
threads. The original bores are few thou. under .375. I reamed them with
a .375 dia reamer and then sleaved them down to fit the case and throat for
the bullet. It took longer to do the cyl. than the conversion ring. Of course
after you do something like this there are things you would do different. But
it was fun working on it and getting the satisfaction of making it work. I made
it .32 A&W Long because sami pressure is 14,000 and I am going to use only
black powder so I know the pressure will be safe for the original cyl.
