I recently took a gamble on a J. C. Higgins Model 60 semi auto 12 gauge shot gun. I paid $65 at the pawn shop for it. I took it home, disassembled it, coated the parts with Kroil, and let it set for 3 months. Last night I got it all cleaned up and back together. I then test fired it with Winchester Super Speed Xtra game loads ( 1oz. #6 shot, 2 3/4", 1350 fps ). The gun fired, but failed to extract the empty case from the chamber, and a loaded round was now positioned behind the empty case in the chamber. After placing the gun on safe, and clearing the failure-to-extract, I reloaded the shotgun and attempted to fire it again. Same results. I am able to feed and extract/eject an entire magazine manually with no trouble. The gas system has a series of cylinder wavy springs (8) and cylinder spacer washers (3). These are held in place by a threaded cylinder nut. The nut has to be tightened down far enough to allow the wooden forearm to properly fit in the forearm base. Does it sound like the extractor spring is too weak?? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I did a comprehensive rework on a similar version of this gun, and it had exhibited a series of malfunctions, starting with double-firing.
I had to eliminate one situation to find the next one in line.
Failure to extract was high on the agenda with some shells, partially due to the chamber being a bit oversize, plus the extractor spring and hook were a bit lackluster and had some interference around the extractor groove.
Cheap shells may swell more than others inside the chamber and elevate the extraction force necessary to provide proper function.
If you try single-firing a series of different shells, you may find that some will extract, and some won't.
You may still have to contend with a feeding problem, but having the spent shell out of the way may be a good start in checking for any other possible problems.
