J.C. Higgins Model 101.1/Savage Model 94c

Hey, just got a neat little single shot 12guage from a gun show today. On the left side it is marked J.C. Higgins Model 101.1, and under that Sears, Robuck & Company. On the right side is stamped model 94c. It apparently is a takedown shotgun, and according to my cousin made sometime around the turn of the century probably before the 1920's. Did a google search and found out the 94c is a Savage model number but other than that I don't know anything about it. Barrel is brand new, 30" or so.

I was wondering if maybe anyone had any info on this gun, or if they could tell me if the $80 I paid for it was a good deal.

Savage bought Stevens in 1920. The Gun Trader's Guide says the Stevens 94 single-shot was made from 1939-1961(the Blue Book says 1929-discontinued.) Came in 12,16, 20,28,.410 with full choke bbls. from 26" to 36". $105.

The 94C from was made 1965 to date(it's a 1998 GTGuide.) $125. Same as the 94 except it has a checkered stock and a fluted forearm on the later production.

Sounds like you got a reasonable deal. Have you shot it yet?

Well I was going to go out with my girlfriend and her mom to shoot it but that never happened. One thing that confuses me, if I remember correctly wasn't it sometime around 1965 that firearms had to have a serial number? This one does not have a serial number. It also doesn't have a checkered stock or fluted forearm.

And a question about it if anyone knows, is there a pin or something that is suppoed to hold the forearm on until you want to take it apart? Because if I don't hold the forearm on when i break the action open it usually will flop off.

I have a Stevens 94C in .410ga and it's a fun little single shot. The forearm should snap together. There is a hook mounted on the barrel and in the forearm there should be a metal "almost looks like an S shape" piece that hooks onto the barrel mount. There is a spring holding up the hook in the forearm.

Yeah, that's exactly how mine works, except it isn't really held on well. It's fine for regular shooting, but my buddy also got a signle shot and I was hoping to do some speed games with him. If I do that, I would have to load with my left hand which would leave no support for the fore end. And I'm sure you know what happens when the fore end comes off...

Turkish,, I too have the same shotgun except mine has an 18" barrel,It belonged to my father and handed down to me, i can remember him having it back in the late 60's. Like your my forearm stock is really loose and will pop off with the slightest bump.I plan on taking it to a gunsmith and getting some work done on it. My Barrel has stamped on it that it is a 2 3/4 inch chamber.
