J-frame in IDPA

I have been shooting informal IPSC matches for a while with my CZ-75 Wondernine. I want to start shooting IDPA as well -- as more practical defensive practice.

The theory behind IDPA, as I understand it, is to "shoot what you carry." My carry gun is a S&W 442 -- a 5 shot j-frame.

I realize I could shoot the 442 in the backup division and shoot the CZ in SSP or ESP -- but that is not what I carry. Does anyone shoot a j-frame in SSR? Is it possible/practical to do so? I know I may not win an matches with a j-frame -- but can it reasonably be done?

In IPSC for example, the strings are usually 6 shots each -- making a 5 shot gun totally impractical.

What do you guys think?

If your intent is to get trigger time with your carry gun, with no intent on trying to win your class (SSR), go for it. You will get some good natured ribbing about how long it takes you to shoot the stage(s), but you will get lots or practice reloading your weapon .

I have allways felt the powers that be of IDPA missed the boat by not having a BUG division. Far more bugs are carried for ccw than full size weapons, yet, with the exception of some rare club level bug stages, this class of weapon is all but ignored, go figure :banghead: .

A guy at one of the matches I attend regularly shoots a smith J frame in 32 mag. He has to reload more often, but he does well enough. You are probably not going to win, but will get some admiration of your peers when they see how you rock with the little snubbie.

I have seen a few people shooting revolvers at the local IDPA match. A couple people in particular were really good at it. Practice, practice, practice

I agree that there should be a regular revolver class for snubs, makes sense. Also, for smaller auto like PPK, PA-63, Maks, these are all viable carry guns. Even if this class said something like, "we're not going to make the course snubby or small auto friendly", so what? I'd compete in this class just for fun once in awhile. Remember fun?

I've been thinking about draging the Kahr MK out once in a while. That ought to be able to play in a BUG class.

My group never does BUG class, I guess I'm gonna have to be the squeaky wheel!

Out scoring sheets have the BUG division on them, just circle that and shoot the match.. Pretty simple. I don't think you have to have BUG specific matches...

It's the 5 shots instead of 6 that would hurt you most. And that's only because the COF's are usually centered around a 6 shot weapon.

The other thing is having IDPA approved leather for BUGs... stong side only, etc.
