J.G. Mod 71/84 Spandau 1887?

Does anyone have any background information on this type of old military rifle?

Thanks.

Sure it is one of the earliest repeating bolt action rifles. In 1871 it was adopted as a single shot by the German Army and in 1884 the tubular magazine was added hence 71/84. It shoots a shouldered black powder cartridge usually referred to as .43 Mauser in this country. The Old Western Scrounger may still have them, someone does.

"J.G." is actually "I.G" for Infanterie Gewehr or Infantry Rifle. The "I" and "J" look alike in the old German Fraktur style. Spandau is (was) the old Prussian Arsenal (a suburb of Berlin) where the rifle was made.
