J M Davis gun museum

I was in Claremore Ok yesterday and stopped in for a few minutes and took some pics. This is supposed to be the largest replica percussion revolver collection in the world with 30 some odd thousand guns, well worth the trip! Its hard to get good pics through glass with light behind you but check em out! It is free and well worth the trip! I took a mess of pics I posted them to my PB.

I grew up in Claremore and went to the "gun museum" many times. Haven't been there in 20 years. It's well worth the trip.

It is a magnificent place to see the evolution of firearms. There are dozens of flintlock mountain man guns; dozens of hundreds of shotguns; a whol section devoted to prison and prisoner artifacts as well as hangman's ropes, hoods, and the like.

I was there several years ago..very nice collection! There is a display of 1930 era gangster guns... One revolver really got my attention...Now I know there was a world wide depression on and all..but one fellow must have really been down on his luck..when caught..he had this 1853 Colt Pocket Navy conversion in .38 rimfire!

brushhippie: Thank you for your post, it sure brought back a bunch of memoriies. Mr Davis and my Grandpaw were friends and quail hunted to grather some times. Back in the 50`s & 60`s his Gun Museum was in his Hotel in Claremore. I got to go there many times growing up. His Hotel was just my favorite place place in the hole World. It was like a fantsay land to me. The way I remember it there were guns on all the walls and celings, stair ways,and halls on the different floors. The way I remember you could not rent a room at the Davis Hotel because all the rooms were full of guns also. Also they way I remember if Mr Davis always wore a white linen suit, kind of looked like a slim copy of COL Sanders white hair and beard. The last time I saw Mr Davis was in late 1967 and we were passing thru on our way to FT KNOX`s Ky. My Son was just a few weeks and we my Wife took some pictures of him holding our Son in the loby of his Hotel. He was a really a GOOD MAN and I was really lucky to have known him.

Thats an awesome story Ken thanks for sharing that, I know the folks from Claremore loved him dearly he was Mayor there for many years! I didnt have time to go to the hotel but I will make time next go-round!

brushhippie: Other all the guns MR DAVIS had for me to look at. The Lobby of his Hotel had a nother wonderful place not just for all the great guns, but the GREAT STORY TELLERS that would grather there were out of this world. I would get so envolved in the stories that were being told I would forget to eat and the lady that ran the Coffee Shop would bring me a sandwich, that happend quite a few times. There would be Old Time Lawmen telling stories about, the Daltons & the Doulins, Bell Star, Bonnie & Clyed, Pretty Boy Floyd, Dillenger, Babyface Nelson, Machine Gun Kelly, Homer Van Metter. They also told stories about Jim Thorp the Indain that won all the gold medals in the Olimpic`s only to have them taken away, and how wroung that was. Stories about Will Rogers, Tom MIX, Sallisaw Ok & the rough people from the Cooksoon Hill. One Man always told the story about Bonnie & Clyed`s last shoot out, and nobody ever even question him on it . I asked how he would know that Bonnie was screaming like a panther while the shooten was going on. And Mr Davis told me that what this man said was true. Because He was one of the Lawmen with Frank Haimer that Killed Bonnie & Clyed and he said Bonnie was alive for a short time after the shooting stoped. BUSHHIPPIE: Thanks again for bring back all thoes old memiories. Because when I am lost in thoes memiories I am Young Man again, And my Lifes Adventures are ahead of me, not some old man on the down side of life.

An amazing place. I liked the guns and Old West stuff, but the crystal and glassware were equally magnificent.
And as you walk in the door, there's a superb Gatling gun pointing at you.
A wonderful museum in a small town and rural area. It's a wonder how they keep it going, but thankfully they do.
Don't miss it!

I try to visit the museum at least once a year since its not too far away. I've been known to take a day off and go there when the stress level gets a bit too high. Marveling at the designs and craftsmanship of centuries of gun making. Mr. Davis is interred in a crypt in the museum so he will always be with his guns. The museum is a little bit of heaven for gun folks so I'd say that it makes an appropriate resting place for it's founder.

Today I stopped at a yard sale and after looking at a pile of pocket knives (most of which seemed quite suitable as matrix in say a concrete patio project) was about to leave when the lady sugested I might like something in the house. Bout what you would expect, cheap jewelry, old cloths, odd furnature.....and a box of post cards.

I found one of the multi panel folding photo brochuremailers from the Davis museum. Since we now make a big deal out of being very careful of copyrighted material on THR I regreat not being able to post it.

I have no idea what the museum is like these days, buy I would have had a hard time checking out of the old hotel based on those photos.

May go back and carry a BP revolver to try out in a holster at some point. I bought an old cigar box from the same folks a week or so back to make a presentation box for one of the .31 BP revolvers with. He had some silver ware boxes way in back he did not want much for that might do for a two gun box if Itake a gun or three to try iin that holster. Slightly tempted to buy some of the silver ware for the material. Unfortunately all his sheath knives were WAY over priced and "I see them go for that on line!" is the answer to "can you do better than that?"
