Hattiesburg
I live in Hattiesburg. Have for over a half century. No range in town, but the one In Ellisville is about 25 minutes North, and there is one, quite active, in Poplarville, about 35-40 minutes south of town. The downtown is mostly defunct and the immediate surrounding neighborhoods are mostly ghetto like. Go out about 3 miles from downtown and the crime is quite low and the neighborhoods are pretty and quiet. Population of the city itself is around 45,000 and is close to 70-72% black. Mayor and police chief are both black and are feuding with the city council which is 3 white and 2 black. Lots of name calling back and forth with the race card being played whenever possible. Ignoring that, the town itself is delightful to live in. The two Institutes of higher learning, the University of Southern Miss. and William Cary College, have boosted the town out of the usual small southern mold. The medical community is extraordinary, with two hospitals with a staff that exceeds 450 physicians in all specialites. Good to excellent private schools and fair (for Mississippi) public schools. The surrounding communities have received a big boost from the coastal migration from Hurricane Katrina and business is booming. Hard to find housing right now...apartments are available but not cheap. Probably another 150,000 people live within 10 miles of the city. Got other questions, let me know.
