Just wondering if there is anyone in either of those areas. I will be relocating to MS and would like to work on my handgun skills/knowledge, etc.

Thanks.

I live in Long Beach, Ms. About an hour drive south of Hattiesburg. If you're lookin for a shooting buddy I've got some handguns and I can show you around the best range in Ms and which gunshops are worth a damn if you're ever in my area.

I lived in the 'burg for a couple years. There's a big indoor range I always meant to try, but never got around to, because I always had a place to shoot outdoors. I want to say it's on Broadway Drive... but I know it's somewhere around there.

BTW Hattiesburg can be a rough town -- both times I've had to use a firearm in self-defense were there, within about a year of each other. Fortunately I never had to shoot anybody.

Hattiesburg can be rough if you get off the beaten path. You're fine in the day light though.

Magnolia Rifle and Pistol. They shoot IPSC, IDPA, High Power rifle(to 300 yards) and there is a full auto club within the main club.

IPSC shoots the first Sunday---don't know about the rest. The other shooters can fill you in on the local where-to-shoot places.Good people all!

Spent some of my summers in Brookhaven

I spent some of my summers, (1965-1969) in Brookhaven, MS. We would go to a Cafe called Browns Cafe. Does anybody know anything about it?

I used to help my uncle cut trees around town. It is where I learned to drive a pickup truck w/ a three speed shifter on the column. The good ole days.

Hattiesburg

I live in Hattiesburg. Have for over a half century. No range in town, but the one In Ellisville is about 25 minutes North, and there is one, quite active, in Poplarville, about 35-40 minutes south of town. The downtown is mostly defunct and the immediate surrounding neighborhoods are mostly ghetto like. Go out about 3 miles from downtown and the crime is quite low and the neighborhoods are pretty and quiet. Population of the city itself is around 45,000 and is close to 70-72% black. Mayor and police chief are both black and are feuding with the city council which is 3 white and 2 black. Lots of name calling back and forth with the race card being played whenever possible. Ignoring that, the town itself is delightful to live in. The two Institutes of higher learning, the University of Southern Miss. and William Cary College, have boosted the town out of the usual small southern mold. The medical community is extraordinary, with two hospitals with a staff that exceeds 450 physicians in all specialites. Good to excellent private schools and fair (for Mississippi) public schools. The surrounding communities have received a big boost from the coastal migration from Hurricane Katrina and business is booming. Hard to find housing right now...apartments are available but not cheap. Probably another 150,000 people live within 10 miles of the city. Got other questions, let me know.

The best place I've found to shoot is the Pascagoula DCM range http://www.pascagouladcm.com,http://www.pascagouladcmforum.com. Its about an hour drive from where I live and probably about an hour and half from hattiesburg but they have regular rifle matches of all types, machine gun shoots, and up to a 1000 meter rifle range and a 200 meter pistol/sight in range. It is set up like a modified military rifle course. The Marines from the SeaBee base go there to qualify.

relocating to Laurel, MS

Sounds like a few of us can get together sometime. I will be relocating with my family to Laurel, MS. I'm inexperienced with pistols, but I want to learn. I look forward to making some contacts with others in the area, and hopefully the more experienced will be willing to help out a newbie and his family. Thanks.

What is your job description? I can connect you with interesting people in the Laurel area. Remember...Laurel is the epicenter of the free state of Jones...Very insular and very hard to get connected. Having said that, My Sister and lots of family live there. So...if you want to shoot...I'll give you some names.

Magnolia Rifle and Pistol Club

This club is near Byram, south of Jackson, just off highway 55. I have a friend who is a member and have visited there several times. I was there on Saturday. This is a very nice unsupervised facility. It is clean and has a club house with a rest room. I believe the membership fees are quite reasonable. If I lived in the area I would join.

I'm new here too. I have an appartment in Vicksburg. On the weekends I go to my house in Louisiana and I shoot in my back yard. This weekend I'm going to an arfcom shoot in south La.

on the road right now

I'm going to be arriving to Laurel later this afternoon. I will be starting next week to work with a friend who is involved in construction, roofing, etc. Once I get settled, I hope to make a few contacts with some of you that are nearby. I'm a newbie when it comes to the pistols, but I hope to learn more and work with my wife and kids also. Looking forward to some good shooting.

Thanks.

Magnolia has already been mentioned - I was a member until I moved to the country :neener:

It's a good range.

The Surplus City store in Clinton (adjoining Jackson) has a short indoor range.

The Southwest Gun Club at McComb (about an hour south of Jackson) has two outdoor ranges.

There are also a couple of shotgun facilities in the area. One is Capitol Gun Club in/near Jackson.

Another possibility is a new range about to open at the Ross Barnett reservoir just north of Jackson. It's owned and managed by the Mississippi Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and adjoins one of their public WMA's. I don't have any specs on it yet.

Finally, there is Sherman Hill range at Forest, MS, about an hour east of Jackson right on I-20. I haven't been there, but have met the owner. Nice guy.
