I got a "PM" question about what to lookout for when buying a Japanese Samurai sword. I thought that I might share a few points with those who are interested.

It is almost like buying a pistol----it is the--FINISH__FINISH__FINISH. Main point to remember that it is about $350 PER INCH to have a sword repolished and at least a year wait.

Second thing is BEWARE of Chinese copies. At the last Gun Show I went to out of the 10 Samurai swords I saw "9" were Chinese. I have even seen some Chinese made blades in traditional Japanese fittings.

Third, is age does NOT have a lot to do with price---it is quality of the blade and maker.

Signed Blades. Everyone wants a "signed blade". The facts are that 80% of the old blades are FAKE signatures. Almost all Army War period blades are signed and just because it is a WWII blade does NOT mean it is of a lesser value.

Anyhow just some thoughts. If there is any interest I will post more. If you need any help please PM me.

What you say is actually pretty much on par with a lot of collectable stuff these days. It is sad in a way that so many excellent hard to tell fakes are out there but on the other hand, this market makes it easy for someone who can't afford a vintage Katana to get one that looks just like one so much it almost takes a pro like yourself to tell them apart from the real thing. I have a Chinese knock off on my wall because it is really nice. But I would never portray it as a genuine Katana.
