jc higgins .22 bolt problem

I acquired an old jc Higgins bolt action .22 clip style and the bolt is out. try as I might without forcing anything I cannot get the bolt to seat. It goes in 3/4 of the way and nothing I do seats it. The firing pin knob at the back is all the way forward as in the fired position. I tried to pull it back but it isn't budging even though it is free to slightly move.

Have you tried holding the trigger back while sliding the bolt in? Jim

Sounds like the bolt isn't cocked. You probably have to hold the handle and twist the body to cock it.
