If you alter that gun I predict that you will regret it.
If you don't use it or feel a need to keep it sell it to someone who will appreciate it.
If it were mine I wouldn't do anything to it & keep it as it is.

You have what I consider to be the best adjustable choke out there. Hope you get many years of enjoyment out of it.
........... I really like it and believe it would be an enhancement to an old High Standard, ( aka J.C. Higgins Mod. 20), pump for general all around usage. My only complaint about my 20 ga. Mossberg 500 is that it's an early model with the single action bar, although it's in beautiful shape. At least on my Mossberg I have the option of easily swapping to a different barrel in a few short minutes. This just jogged my memory that I did receive an extra barrel with the gun when I got it and I've never put it on, (yet)...... A factory 20 ga. full choke 28" barrel that I never put on because the C-Lect choke has a full choke setting and it works well. I'll have to put this one on and pattern test it just out of curiosity. IMG_8835.JPG ... IMG_8836.JPG ... IMG_8834.JPG ... Charlie Martinez nailed it with the predicted regret about altering it. I'd definitely leave it "as is" and sell it if just won't fit into the OP's needs & wants and seek out something that can get a quick & easy barrel swap.

I'm pretty much a traditionalist, and would prefer to see the gun left alone as well. I also can't stand the look of those polychokes on old shotguns...but I also own an old 12 gauge bolt (was MY grandpa's) with polychoke and it patterns better than about every shotgun I've owned. That said, it's yours to do with as you please. I'm positively sure my grandpa would not be rolling in his grave if I altered his old gun. He'd be more likely to be pleased I found a use for it amongst many other, better shotguns I own.

I'm the guy that had my old 20 ga. 1100 barrel cut to 20" and stock shortened to fit my wife for use as an HD shotgun. Against the advice of horrified posters here on THR. I'm also the guy who has his 6" 686 silhouette model at the gunsmith becoming a 3" 686 with tritium sights, again against the advice of horrified posters here. Heard it over and over again, don't mess with that classic, you'll be sorry and so on. Not sorry even one little bit.

Big believer in doing what you want with what you own and not looking back.

"Clean97GTI, your photos show an adjustable polychoke on the shotgun. I don’t have personal experience but those were used in the day of paper wads, and might not function best with modern plastic shot cups & wads — as in the plastic may jam and blow the barrel. Please watch this YouTube starting at time mark 5:55."

The gun in the vid also has a Cutts comp on it that has slots to let the gas out the sides. The modern wads with the petals could catch in the slots and act as an obstruction. The OPs gun has a plain polychoke with nothing to catch on.
