I finally tracked down what I believe to be the proper extractor for my variation of the 31; mine has a wider extractor groove in the bolt so I believe it take the dual-claw extractor with a hole for a retaining pin in it. I looked over my bolt last night and there is a vertical pin in the extractor channel so I assume that's what I need to drift out when I get my extractor.

My question is: is there an extractor spring somewhere in there? Or does the extractor just rest in the channel, retained by the pin, and have enough springiness in itself?

Any info would be helpful. I realize these are old and relatively rare guns so my hopes aren't high, but... ;)

The springs are rathere inexpensive, I would just order both. Ask Numrich if you can send back the extractor that doesn't work if you order both of them.
If you talk to them on the phone, they may help you out.

Well I found a partially complete bolt on gunbroker and took a chance; turned out it had the part I needed. I'm posting these pics here in case future visitors turn up this thread in a search for info on Model 31 extractors. Turns out there's no extractor plunger, at least on my dual-claw-type, just a tiny little extractor spring that bears against the right side of the bolt (in the extractor groove) and presses out on the rear of the extractor. The extractor I got from numrich is a milled type, and it turns out the hole in it itsn't big enough to allow passage of the extractor pin. So I cleaned up the grungy old stamped type extractor that came with the "new" bolt and reused it in my bolt. Pics below show some minor differences between the bolts; mine has beveled front edges, the other doesn't, also the firing pin retaining pin is longer on the other bolt, and the bolt isn't recessed for the head of that pin; mine is.

Anyway I'm excited to have my bolt back together after about 22 years or so of waiting and looking for parts and whatever. Can't wait to try it out.
