I have just read something about Jeff Coopers Commentaries. Can anyone tell me if these are available to view on line, and maybe give me a link??? Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like he may be the originator of the 5 or is it six methods of carrying... very interested in the history?

I saved most of my Guns and Ammo magazines, and a few Soldier of Fortune as well, that I had from the 1970's mainly so I could go back and reread Jeff Cooper's articles, columns, and commentaries. Always great stuff!

Cooper's Commentaries are a GREAT read, and should be required reading in school (like that will ever happen!). Took me a little while, but I got through them all years ago, and then I read them again.

The knowledge contained in these commentaries should be shared with others close to you.

They are certainly interesting. Cooper was an interesting guy. I read them when the were Gunsite Gossip back in the day and still have the magazines. Fun to go back and look at them on the link provided.

My wife & I homeschool two teenagers, and I added selected sections from his writings as a part of our political science/history curriculum. It also helps that we have first-edition printings of most of his books for additional study. When I presented the material to the school district administrator for consideration to help other students, the look on the woman's face could only be described as one of complete horror and utter dismay. Of course that has only bolstered my children's resolve to go deeper into various "politically incorrect" writings, but they have enjoyed and benefitted from that resolve. Oh boy, has this been fun!

For those that have only read his columns in the Guns and Ammo magazine, they didnt print all he wrote each month, they edited it down to fit their page requirement. The online collections have all the pages, as does the book thats available. If you've only read his stuff from the magazine, you missed a lot.

Did Cooper have a ugly split with Gunsite? Just reading the first volume he seems a bit acrimonious towards the institution...

Orange Gunsite was sold to a....troll, who made the good Colonel unwelcome on the property. This was awkward considering that he and the Countess lived in the Sconce, mere meters away. That business decision was one he regretted. The current Gunsite is not the one he had heartburn over (and yet is not "Orange", which is an important distinction to Family Members from days of yore.

Interesting. So what's the status of gunsite these days as a training facility? I see lots of people skewering what they used to teach, but it seems they at least produced a benchmark by which to judge. Is it considered a top facility, or a has - been?

The current facility, known as Gunsite Academy, had regained its reputation. It is once again a top training venue.

About ten years ago it was bought by the current owner, Buzz Miller. Miller greatly respected Col. Cooper, and there was much mending of fences. When I first went to Gunsite (Gunsite Academy) Jeff Cooper was the Range Master (senior instructor) for my class.

Under the ownership of Dr. Richard Jee, it became known as "Grey Gunsite", the period after "Orange Gunsite". Reading the history is indeed interesting. For a time Cooper was teaching over at the NRA's big facility, Whittington Center in New Mexico.
Gunsite is one of the best places to train IMO. I have found both the administrative and teaching staff to be excellent. Accommodations in the Chino Valley are now more abundant, but you can still stay at the old motel that the old-timers liked due to the thick concrete/block walls. Now it is called the Primrose.
