Shooting a comparison of 158gr RN .38 Spl, Hornady .357 flex tip and a plastic 38gr bullet Jerry does some serious damage to a chicken carcass illustrating the effect of velocity.

Saw that a couple days ago. It blows the chicken up good but look how shallow that damage is compared to the more traditional 357 Mag.

38gr isn't going to penetrate much, not much mass to retain inertia. But the .357 round is a lot more spectacular than the .38 at half the speed.
