‘Where is our conscience?’

RIVERDALE, Ill. (June 29, 2007)-- Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of Rainbow PUSH Coalition, announced today he will organize a national day of protest in 25 cities on Aug. 28, 2007, to rally support for legislation to restrict gun sales.

“We have the right to live safe and secure, no matter where we live in America,” Rev. Jackson said during a prayer vigil at Chuck’s Gun Shop in this Chicago suburb.

“Our marching does not kill people; people who buy guns from gun shops kill people,” Rev. Jackson said.

Chuck's Gun Shop sells more guns than any other gun dealer in the nation, according to the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation.

Current laws are not protecting the nation’s youth, Rev. Jackson said, as is clear from the fact that in Chicago alone, more than 30 young people have died this year from gun violence.

Father Michael Pfleger of the Faith Community of St. Sabina said that in 2002 and 2003, when the Chicago Police department recovered guns used to commit crimes, a total of 800 of them were traced back to Chuck’s Gun Shop. Last Saturday, Rev. Jackson and Fr. Pfleger were arrested while leading their third protest this year at this store.

About 200 people joined Rev. Jackson and Fr. Pfleger at today’s prayer vigil, including Jennifer Bishop of Million Moms March. Also present were Annette Holt, Blair Holt’s mother, and Brandon Crawford, Blair’s best friend. Holt, a 16-year-old honor student, was killed in May in a shooting on a CTA bus.

“Annette’s son is not the last one to die,” Rev. Jackson said. “Ten have died since Blair, including three shot this week. We choose life over death, and we want to close down merchants of death.”

Rev. Jackson said the nationwide rallies would represent a grassroots effort to press state and federal legislators into passing “common sense” legislation to stem the flow of handguns and military-style automatic weapons.

“I encourage anyone running for the presidency to address this issue in their next debates,” Rev. Jackson said. He favors tighter restrictions on who is allowed to buy guns, better background checks, longer waiting periods for gun purchases, and restrictions on how many guns an individual may buy within a calendar period.

The National Rifle Association, a powerful special-interest lobbying organization and chief proponent of lax rules for gun ownership, is promoting a federal bill that would, among other things, eliminate any limits on the quantities of guns an individual may purchase.

“We should all be outraged at the number of young people killed,” said Annette Holt. “Where is our conscience? Any mother or father who shares my pain should stand with me and take action.”

The August 28 protests will take place on the anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic March on Washington.

Who knows how much publicity this will actually get, hopefully not much.

It disgusts me how Jesse claims to be protecting and defending civil rights when he does everything he can to take away the second amendment.

Gee, I wonder when he'll notice that handguns are banned in Chicago? How's that working out for them?

How can we call Jackson out, publicly? There's no way a big-time, smile-for-the-camera guy like him runs around without some sort of security detail. How can we find out for sure if he employs armed guards? If he does, this needs to be made very, very public.

This is almost laughable.

people who buy guns from gun shops kill people,” Rev. Jackson said.

When is he going to get it.....people that purchase firearms through the legal process from a gun dealer/FFL are subject to the NICS Background Investigation.

People that buy guns on the black market/on street corners are the ones that are committing crimes and killing people..

What a daft idiot.

You mean like the Chicago handgun ban and the National Firearms Act of 1934/68/86? Already passed Jacko.

Since when was there a law about this? Since when did collectors with 100+ guns fit the profile for a criminal? The closest thing to this is 'one gun a month' laws, I am not aware of any law that prevents you from owning 1000 or more guns.

Funny he never mentions the fact that most of these sad killings of our young people are actually just crack-business as usual. Most of those involved could not and did not buy a gun through any legal channels, and besides ignoring the 20,000 or so gun laws on the books, they ignored the big one against murder.

Jesse and his pet dog Al are buffoons. How can we ever take anything we read in the mainstream media seriously when they seem to believe every lie and invented 'fact' these idiots spout.

Okay, how's this for common sense legislation?

Massive FBI infiltration of street gangs. Death penalty for ALL proven members. 30 years solitary confinement for all those found wearing gang clothing or insignia, no parole. Racial, gender and demographic profiling given the unconditional go-ahead in our search for gang members and others who are likely to commit crime. Let's catch them before they kill, or kill again.

War on Terror? Let's have a real War on Gangs.

It's true: young males involved in gangs are bigger killers than Al Qaeda.

Now does anyone want this? I don't. But this would make a lot more "common sense" than shutting down a store because some (a tiny fraction) of what it sells ends up in the wrong hands.

"Common Sense" may have been the name of some of Thomas Paine's writings, but I don't see "Common Sense" in the Bill of Rights. That's a good thing, too, because "common sense" would be an excuse to deny a lot of civil rights to a lot of people, not the least being young black males, based on crime statistics and the statistical likelihood for violence.

I don't want "common sense." I want civil rights. I am willing to accept the risks that come with individual freedom. I want every young black man -- and every other person -- to be treated as an individual human being, not as a potential crime statistic. But now Jesse Jackson wants "common sense"?

Furthermore, a gun store is more highly regulated and more carefully watched by State and Federal Governments than any other establishment. If Chuck's had sold guns to anyone who is a known criminal, they'd be out of business at the very least.

If it is because what is sold ends up in the gang's hands, let's shut down the food stores. They sell them the food that keeps these violent thugs alive. If stores would refuse to sell them food, problem over.

I know, what I just "proposed" is stupid. But then, so is Jesse Jackson. Anything to get his face on TV.

How would the good father know how many guns used in crimes originally came from Chuck's? Did Chicago PD throw out that 800-gun number? If so, did they also say how the criminals obtained them?

Aside from Jessie's and his friend's malapropism, distortion of facts, and the like, I do believe they are suborning our legislators to violate the Second Amendment when there is a perfectly constitutional avenue for him to pursue the laws he wants passed - by amending the Constitution to allow such laws.

Not very Christian of him to goad others to break the Supreme Law of the Land.

...Could be that he, through his "Rainbow Coalition", just needs the money.

I really wish that Jackson and his ilk would work with FACTS, not guesses!! Can the man just not read?? The FBI has already published reports as to how these kids are obtaining guns. And no, it's NOT from the gun stores!!

Screw Jesse Jackson. Just another "Detroit Red" "X" wanna-be. I cant stand his BS and if you have ever seen him off camera it is F*** this and F**** that. The guy knows how to talk when the big crowds are around though. Past that he is another worthless drag on our economy and really has no use to anyone. He is definitely anything other than Honorable.

Jackson should work on education (or would that put him out of a job) :barf:

If he does Cincinnati or Cleveland, I will be OC counter protesting with my P38 in holster.

Why do that when you can exercise your 1st Amendment rights with a camera fitted with one of those lenses that make it look like a photon cannon?
Might be a little interesting to see what happens if you are openly taking carefully composed shots of attendees faces.
