RIP- A true loss to the shooting community. His distinctive voice was a memorable part of the rare times I got to watch shooting related programing on TV as a young adult.
Gone far too soon, 77 is not that old. Always used to tell my wife (a huge Martha Stewart fan) that I'd love Jim's job -- he was like the Martha Stewart of firearms media. He gave us American Shooter, the first of the gun TV shows, never missed it. You could just tell by his calm spirit and the way he presented himself that he was a good man. Another significant loss for our community.
Such sad news indeed. RIP I used to love watching his shows like American shooter. I think He did a car show too years ago if I'm not mistaken. Also I agree with another poster here that 77 isn't that old really.
I met Jim when he came around to Les' shop years ago to film an episode of "American Shooter." The first thing to draw my immediate attention was that voice! Powerful, penetrating...the kind of voice that could reduce a room full of babblers to instant silence. Jim was a BIG time car nut as well as a gun man. He and Les got along great. ( Les has a collection of around 50 Ford Mustangs, all high performance V-8s. ) He took Jim for a ride in his thousand horsepower Shelby and Jim came back all smiles.
The only show host to respond to a comment I made about a subject in his show, "Impossible Shots". I complimented him and the show about their accuracy, attention to safety and variety of subjects. My concern was about "Mr Flintlock" using no eye or ear protection. Part of my statement, "most hazardous to the eyes firearm extant".
His reply showed honesty and humor. " We have little control over how some shooters do their thing. I felt I owed you a response as you are the first person I've known to properly and appropriately use 'extant' in a sentence."
Nobody better badmouth Jim to me.
Few know this but the show he hosted just prior to this one was originally intended to have Chuck Connors as host. Cancer got him first.
