The good news: it wasn't related to the fact I was packin' -- no one even guessed (I love my SmartCarry).

The bad news: no more income.

Shameless plug:

If you are aware of anyone in Minnesota with a need for a literate, pistol-packin' web developer (keywords: ASP, JSP, VB, VBScript, Java, JavaScript, SQL Server, Oracle), either as an employee or as a contractor (I am incorporated), send me a shout.

I'm not terribly worried (yet) as the severance package is generous, but with a little one due any day now, family harmony would best be served by a more certain financial future.

Thanks!

Matt

Good luck to you.

Been there, done that (13 months "off" while Al and George were each telling us the economy was beautiful, and I knew they were lying).

a guy with your breadth of skills should never have to be unemployed.

Unfortunately, the tech job market sucks right now. I know lots of people out of jobs in the tech industry.

Aw, heck, more time to shoot. (`til the money runs out...)

:)

Truely. I actually ended up shooting a fair bit more than usual the year I was unemployed. Good way to de-stress.

But that's ok because the commercialization of nano-technology is just around the corner and everyone will have a job.
I think I'm too large for any job in nanotech :D

I would check out the United Healthcare website.
Done. Filled out their painful online app. Thanks for the pointer.

Thanks also to Big_R and repsychler. Gun people are good people!

Good Luck in finding a job in this non-hiring recoverery....
My job with Bosch went south to Brazil, where Taurus is, and they make $65/month down there, heck I heard that even Mexico lost 200,000 jobs to the Chinese.
A lot of companies are still moving or cutting back. A local refrigator company here is going south, and we need Bush's guest workers? He thinks he can make the economy better by hiring more Mexican maids and gardeners?
Oh well, got plenty of time this winter to reload.

MPayne,

Yeah, that application on-line is quite tedious and painful. I just submitted one in case I decide to start doing chart reviews looking for insurance fraud. I did it in a half-hour or so, but I wanted to scream by the end.

telecommute....

That's what they're doing in India now and that's why half of our jobs have been shipped overseas!:banghead: :cuss: :fire: :uhoh: :scrutiny:

Matt,

Sorry to hear about your job situation. I have a web developer friend who was laid off from Lawson Software in downtown St. Paul back in July 2002. He's still unemployed.

I work in IT in the public sector, and am seeing many new web development projects being shipped to India, while we are in the midst of an indefinite hiring and benefits freeze.

With your talents, I'm certain you'll find a suitable position soon. In the meantime, if you need someone to shoot with, PM me. I'm normally at the BPR about one night per week.

dleong,

I may do that. We seem to have plenty of THR people in the Twin Cities. We should get together and shoot sometime.

One more thing. A lot of the jobs here are going contract. It's not my field, but three of the contract houses I see used a lot are First Street, Entegee, and Intech. They're all on the web. Depending on how soon you need to be employed, you may want to check out a headhunter.

BPR = Burnsville Pistol Range?

We should organize a Twin Cities shoot sometime. I am usually off during the daytime, as hockey and work monopolize my evenings and nights, but the mention of BPR makes me want to go put some rounds downrange with my 3" SP101.

Sucks about your job Mpayne, I'm a toolmaker an it's pretty slow here right now too. Hope you can find something.

A Twin Cities THR get together would be cool, I've met a few people from Park Cities Tactical and the 1911 Forums and been shooting. I"m up on the north side in Blaine, but wherever inthe cities would be cool with me.

A Twin Cities THR shoot would rock. I met dandean316 last weekend, and I bought a Makarov from Omega, but otherwise I haven't met any others. I usually shoot at Armored-Fire, but I'd try to make it to any of the other ranges for a shoot.

dleong. How about that. I was laid off from Lawson Software in Nov '01, right after 911. I was a contractor and we were the first to go.

Anyhow, I landed on my feet, in South Carolina. After being out of work for four months, I broadened my search out of the Twin Cities and moved. Certainly don't miss the winters either.
