I am watching 'Joe Kidd' on AMC right now. One of the bad guys has a Mauser Broomhandle. The moive was set in late '80s or early '90s. When were Broomhandles made? I was under the impression that they came along a decade ot two later. They do make a big deal out of how fast and how mush it can shoot though and the guy who owns it is somewhat wealthy. Maybe it was new and they got it right.

I can't say for sure but I think the broomhandle is a C-96.
So I am thinking 1896.

A fascinating pistol with only screw being the grip screw. Everything else fits together like a chinese puzzle ,Iguess that's why the chinese liked it.It is the 1896 Mauser made in 7.63 Mauser, 9mm Mauser [many don't know about that one] 9mm luger [9x19] and for the chinese 45acp . It was the first RELIABLE semi auto pistol.... BTW the rifle [bolt action ,tubular mag, ]in that movie is a Remington-Keene.

Best I recall, Robert Duvall starts out uncasing a Savage 99. Could have been a Savage 95, I guess, but that would be the earliest. If you assume that the prop man knew his guns and the millieu of the story AND cared enough to get it right. That is a big assumption in the movie business. Mostly they just want something to look bad-A.

That scoped RK showed up in at least one other spaghetti western, but I misremember which.

Frontier conditions of the kind depicted in the movie existed in parts of Arizona and New Mexico well past the first decade of the 20th century. Neither became states until 1910 and 1912.

As I sit here I'm looking at a picture taken of "A" Company, Texas Rangers in 1903. The various rangers have Winchester's and Colt Single Action's.

But in the front row, Capt. J.A. Brooks is seated with his Model 1896 "Broomhandle" Mauser, complete with shoulder stock.

The hired killer played by Brad Johnson in Tom Selleck's Crossfire Trail also used a scoped Remington-Keene.

I think the April 1972 American RIfleman has an article on the Remington-Keene. It's a very interesting weapon in my view.

Crossfire Tail's good too.
