Ok fellas , what is the consensus on the charter arms undercover vs the taurus 85? Im looking for a revolver for jogging and walking the dog when i dont feel like strapping on a big .44 like i usually do. im not looking at smith or ruger , not because of any hatred towards them but all of my revolver are already one of those brands and id like a little variety.

What kind of jogging? Are you going to be wearing very light athletic shorts?

Long distance running? trail running? track? fartlek/interval training?

If trail running, when i wear heavier shorts I can wear a revolver in my holster.
If training on road i usually wear a fanny pack.

If doing speed work (ie. fartlek as mentioned above... don't laugh, it's a real word in Swedish), no gun at all. Anything bouncing around at that high speed is too annoying.

As for charter vs. taurus.... no opinion, other than I have had wonderful past experience with a Taurus model 85. But mine was a steel model. You;d obviously want to keep it as light as possible for this purpose. When running, even the littlest bounces get really annoying over time.

Taurus/rossi are good guns. Charter is good provided it was made in the right time period. Lots of folks more knowledgeable than me on the topic, but from my experiences I would be much more comfortable with the taurus.

Kel-Tec, Ruger, or Smith .380.
Lighter than the Charter and Taurus revolvers.

I tried to get my revolvers to jog, but they're too lazy.

I will primarily jogging on a track , sometimes on the sidewalk, with a dog.

I have no experience with the tiny .380s(although I should change that) . In my area im more worried about unfriendly dogs as there are alot of strays about (and i have been attacked by dogs before) than I am about 2 legged threats therefore i was leaning towards the .38 special for the heavier bullet weights

I use the 85 below for just those purposes.

Depending upon particulars - around here - 1 or 2 rounds of snake shot and then (if not completely) Federal HS.

Given the mere ounce or so in difference in weight, I guess you gotta go with what feels best, not counting cost.

For me, though I'm a big fan of CA's Bulldogs, I don't really like the feel of the Undercovers as much as I do a S&W mimicking Taurus.

As to the oh-so-common nay sayers, we've shot and beaten the bejeepers outa this one and it keeps on ticking.

I think a S&W M&P 340 with some low recoil .38 shells is right up your ally.

Small, very very light for a revolver, and decently powerful. I know you said no S&W but honestly I thank the M&P 340 would be about the best "joggers companion" revolver on this side of the universe.

In the past I have used both, with no problems. Currently I may be found with an airweight Taurus 85 (that is the only pocket revolver I haven't had to de-spur to prevent catching during the draw from a pocket) or a larger Taurus model 445 (5-shot .44 Special snubby). Again no problems, but it's sad that they always discontinue any model I like. :(

Hard to find a better running companion than a NAA mini revolver in .22Mag. I have gone on runs with pocket .380s, pocket 9s, and NAAs. The NAA was always far more comfortable of a carry.

Your call on what you want, but by ruling out Ruger you are ruling out what I think is the ultimate gun for this type of duty, the LCR. Very light, highly corrosion resistant, tough and with a very good trigger, I can't imagine a better choice. As Always, YMMV.

OF - I love my 445 too. I didn't expect the recoil to be so easy. A little big for jogging maybe, but it feels great in my coat picket when I'm out walking.

Between the two I would go with the Charter Arms Undercover, probably their stainless DAO model. If I could choose another revolver it would be a S&W Model 638 and if I were looking for a semi-auto then a Kel-Tec P3AT would be my choice.

I have ran hundreds of miles over the years with a S&W 442 with very little wear on the blued finish. I wear mesh athletic shorts with a draw-string to adjust how tight they need to be to wear the gun appendix with a gray cotton shirt as a cover garment (gets darker when sweaty/less hot than black) I use Hogue bantam grips for concealment and the grip remains tacky when sweaty.

A quick wipe with a dry cloth then an oiled gun cloth after each run has kept the gun no worse for wear.

You say you don't want a S&W, so whichever brand you prefer that copies the Centennial frame design the best would be my choice.

Of the 2 you listed I think I would go with the charter Arms revolver.
The Charter Arms Undercover Off Duty weighs only 12oz so it will be easy to carry and not feel like a brick is strapped to your waist. It is a DAO revolver too.

If you don't like a 12oz revolver the Undercover Blue DAO weighs 16oz. The Police Undercover weighs 20oz but it also has a 6 round cylinder so if an extra round is important to you that's the revolver to get. (all IMO of course)

Exactly. it's the lightest gun in the price range, and I don't think you could get a better gun for this particular job. As soon as you are running, bouncing weight is your enemy.

ill rent the .357 one at my range and compare it to the charter arms they have.

The .38spl model is lighter, for what it's worth. It would be my priority on a jogging revolver Don't know if it's yours.

All depends on where you are jogging. For example, in Beverly Hills, a Model 36 S&W should be adequate. In Ferguson, MO, you could tow a cart with a Browning Model 1919 with a few ammo boxes.

i used to be a long distance runner before injuries. i couldnt stand to take anything with me more than a house or car key in a small pouch attached to my shoe laces. i cant even imagine how you guys run with a j frame iwb.

I don't know where you get the idea there are Ruger or Smith haters here. I also think you are ruling out the holy grail. Belly band for a holster and the ruger LCR in 38 sp. The LCR has a very nice DA trigger
