I am in the market for a safe at home for my NFA weapons and work weapons. I am leaning towards the Zykan G5931 but the unpolished look kind of has me holding back on it. I was reading a forum today and someone mentioned Johnson Safe Co. I checked it out and read some reviews and I was pretty impressed with the construction. I don't know if they have a fire or burglary warranty but that isn't important to me anyways unless they guarantee to replace the contents of the safe at full value which nobody does. Your insurance will replace the actual safe anyways so that whole marketing ploy is a bit of a scam. I have a monitored alarm system with motion detectors, glass break sensors and IP Cameras and the police station is 3 miles away. Whichever safe I purchase the thieves will have a limited amount of time to mess with it.
I talked to Mr. Johnson on the phone and he stated that he could make me a safe with 7 gauge sides and a solid 1/2" steel plate door with ceramic fire lining all through the safe. He stated that he can paint it in any color that I want, he recommended that I go to the automotive store and pick out my favorite color and he will paint it that color included in the cost. The cost for a 36" x 60" x 24" is less than $2000.00
He stated that it is all US made steel and parts and he doesn't use S&G locks (he uses La Gard) anymore since they are mostly made oversees since the purchase of the company by Stanley Tools. I was looking at a photo of a Johnson safe in another forum and when I zoomed in it looked like the door was slightly off level, it could just be the photo, other than that it is a sharp looking safe just look at the solid steel plate on the door and the pretty weld bead. http://ingunowners.com/forums/acces..._safe_to_real_pink_cadillac_johnson_safe.html
Does anyone have any experience with either the Zykan safe or the Johnson safe, overall I am very impressed with both manufactures? Both Frank and Mr. Johnson have been very helpful so now it just comes down to which one is a better safe.
I know that I am going to get pelted with questions why I don't want a Sturdy safe. I don't like the lack of color choices and the price is pretty high once you factor in fire protection. The scare tactics they use on there website like telling you tempered glass re-lockers are bad and the videos they make of their product and how hard it is to get into. When I see videos from a group of professional thieves or safe experts unassociated with the company stating that they can't get into a safe then I will be impressed. Just my opinion, they might have great safes but the used car dealership type marketing turns me off.
