Actually if you take a look at the charters of these organizations, you could see that they are all pretty well protected against any kind of takeover like that you have outlined. Even the NRA leadership is pretty tough to remove from its throne once they get there.

The Brady Campaign is much worse. Members are lucky if they are even allowed to speak at public events without approval from higher authority and they certainly aren't allowed to decide the direction of policy or elect leaders who have actual decision-making powers.

Groups like AGS and VPC just dispense with the pretense of a grass-roots organization altogether and run their organizations autocratically. Personally, I think we should encourage them to be more restrictive in their membership, not less. The more restrictive they are in membership, the more they automatically limit their size and political power.
 
I'm on their mailing list just to see the new BS they come up with. Every month I get a email about an upcoming meet up with the MMM'ers. At the last minute, the meeting is cancelled because of lack of participation. BTW. There is close to 4 million people in my area (metro Detroit) and they (MMM) can't get 10 for a meeting. :p
