JSP for Self Defense bullets?

So then could it be safely said that SP is equally as good as if not better than FMJ? If it expands, Great! and if it doesn't than it has done the same amount of damage as a FMJ anyway.

Given the relatively low velocities of pistol rounds, it is very difficult to make a reliably expanding JHP. Without the hollow in the point, it is nearly impossible. If a JHP cavity gets pluged with material, it doesn't expand. Any bullet that was expected to expand but fails is going to function like a FMJ.

So, if a HP fails to expand, it's like FMJ. And if it does expand, it's superior to FMJ.

That's pretty easy to figure out.

In semi-autos, yeah, failed JHPs act like ball. That's because the JHP shape on typical slidegun calibers is set up to be "ball like" at the feed ramp.

But that means that feed ramp compatibility is a limiting factor in semi-auto JHP designs.

Revolver ammo doesn't have to compromise like that. Some revolver JHPs look like their semi-auto cousins but an increasing number do NOT. Fat-hollowpoint designs like the Speer 135gr .38/357 slug feature a hollowpoint cavity basically impossible in slideguns. The classic 158gr all-lead hollowpoints have an even weirder nose based NOT on a "ball" profile but on a SemiWadCutter (SWC) which even in non-expanding flavor is a known killer - also called a "Keith profile".

Buffalo Bore just released the nastiest non-expanding round possible in 38Spl - a full wadcutter loaded to fighting power levels (versus "target") with a bore-width flat nose in hardcast so it retains that "cylindrical stomp" inside the target. Comparing that to military autoloader ball ammo is borderline ridiculous. Inside 50 yards (before the funky flight characteristics kick it's butt) it's a flying baseball bat. That shape is impossible in an autoloader unless the gun was tuned for that and nothing else...

When revolver hollowpoints fail, you often have a more deadly slug than something similar from an autoloader.

What does your local law enforcement agency recommend?
Dear Mr. Greebly,

Thank you for your inquiry into the best ammunition to use for self defense.

We always appreciate the effort by a responsible citizen to use the tool appropriate to the job at hand.

We at the police department use JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point) ammunition for our service weapons because
1) there is less risk of overpenetration and thus collateral injury, and
2) it more reliably achieves the objective of reliably stopping a threat without requiring further shots which might endanger bystanders.

Please feel free to ask any other questions regarding enforcement of the law and any related issues.

Sincerely,

Capt. Fingertwiddle
Local Police Dept
