What are the pros and cons for the different 10 MM bullets for hogs? I am planning on using a 10 MM pistol as a rifle backup to finish off wounded hogs in the brush or short range weapon (less than 50 yards).

Is there a reason to choose hardcast bullets (no expansion, maximum penetration) for shooting hogs over JHP?

Do hardcast bullets offer more penetration over FMJ?

I have shot numerous Hogs with rifle bullets .303, 6.8 MM SPC and most but not all of my broadside chest shots fully penetrated through the animal and exited the otherside. Do you think that a JHP that fully expands in the vitals but does not exit better or worse than a non-expanding bullet that exits the animal?

they damage more tissue because of a bigger meplat (flat face) on the bullet.

I'd check out Doubletap or Swampfox's 200gr Hornady XTP load.

The mechanics of wounding are different (and not fully understood) in a pistol vs rifle wound.
Ideally you would have a bullet that expands as large as possible while penetrating just through the target.

Gold Dot, Golden Saber Bonded, XTP and Barnes are good HP's for hunting. Hardcast FP's are the best non HP bullets as mentioned above. I also like large meplats for SD and hunting so even though the XTP is a good solid HP, I would use any of the above but it.

Last hog I shot was with a 230 +P HST from an M&P 45c. It went down permanately with one shot in the jaw/neck area 3-4" below it's ear. I usually prefer 10mm myself but we were clearing trails on my in-laws land and was'nt planning on seeing any hogs with the tractors and chainsaws making all that noise.

i'm going to use 10mm XTP jhp's for hog hunting. they expand reliably, and penetrate very well. either 180gr or 200gr is good to go.

gold dots don't penetrate as much as XTP's because they expand quicker. those are better allocated for personal defense.

golden sabers & silvertips penetrate even less because they shatter/separate.

personally, i would not use FMJ or hardcast for hogs. not a big enough permanent wound channel.

swampfox ammo is what i have. good stuff.
