Bates found this old CVA Derringer Kit. Similar ones are still available from Dixie and the Possibles Shop. It's a bit bigger than the Wilkes Booth Deringer but is about the same size as a lot of Derringer's pistols. He did a good job of shaping and checkering the stock.

Deringer put for and aft sights on his pistols so, bates did the same. The kits come with a press to fit front bead but Bates did it one better. The kits don't have a rear sight so, he made one and dovetailed it in.

We had trouble getting the chronograph to read the balls for some reason but did get one shot each with Goex and Swiss. 50 feet seems to be a healthy enough distance for this type pistol. I put one round at 6 o'clock at the bottom of the paper but the other three are pretty good.

One thing I didn't remember is that these have a coil mainspring. May ad a bit to service life.
He was out of plumb brown so, coated the barrel with salt water, left it in a jar with wet rags and then boilled it. I didn't know this would brown a barrel but it did.

amazingly enough, I tried to speed up my shooting a bit and found it easy to miss a 5 gallon jug.

That came out really nice. The rear sight is a great touch. I've always been curious as to those little guns actual accuracy capabilities if they had sights. Thanks for the pics. :)

It's got nice, deep rifling. Henry Deringer did that too as well as the front and rear sights-even on some that were so small that smoothbore would probably serve just as well.

I could do that too. The three in the picture were good releases. I don't know what happened to number 4, the one that hit near the bottom of the target. Likely, I anticipated the shot and yanked it low.

I have the same derringer, just shot it for the first time today, after all the smoke cleared...i missed a trash can at 20 feet..shoots high..but lotsa fun after you figure out the sighting situation

Anybody got a line on the sidelock screw sizes? Just got one and it's missing the screw that goes though the stock into the lockplate behind the hammer.
Have a chunk of briar stump with really fancy burl that I'm going to restock with.

How nice..!

There was a 1950s Kit for something very similar to this one a few weeks ago on e-bay...darn it, I missed bidding on it...sold for $12.00

Would have been a fun Kit to try one's hand at.

We need a smilie head held in one hand with eyes closed, shaking his head.

Uh,... that would have been a PLASTIC MODEL Derringer kit. Real black powder guns are not allowed on EBay, much less any gun.

The Doc is out now.

Oh no...it was the real thing...an un-assembled 1950s era Kit...on e-bay...and no one put the kaibosh on it, either...was so nice to see...

Was listed as a 'Model Kit'...
