ok when i was around 10 years old my uncle gave me this old kurkri (however you spell it) knife that was pretty junked up, it didnt even have a handle, it was rusted and it was verry dull. so today i found it in my dresser droor and i decided to refurbish it. today i got the rust off the blade, polished it and sharpened it to a verry fine edge. i will post as i go along making it a shiney new knife and making some new walnut burl grips:D

why? im not going to do anything to dull it while i put the grips on, also where can i get a pair of nice wanut burl blanks?

you're going to cut your hands up on the blade... but you could just wrap it with paper and tape...

So you can count to 10 after you start.

People who build knives do NOT work on knives with sharp blades. Or if they do they don't do it very long.

yeah

shoulda thought that one through, oh well i guess ill just have to play the masking tape song:)

I've got a couple of pieces of Goncalo Alves, or Cocobolo that would work.

You welcome one as long as I get to see the finished product. :D

update

ok its not much improovment but, i cleaned all of the rust off the back of the handle (it was covered) and i bought some metal polish and polished the brass hilt to a gold finish. im still choosing on what kind of wood, i think ill go for some walut burl from a local exotic wood shop. no thanks jojo, thats really nice of you but my dad offered to pay for the grips:D

if you don't mind me asking, what did you do to get the rust off the blade? Also, how heavily caked was it? Are we talking antique farm equipment 100% of the blade covered rust?

omni: for somthing caked with rust(like agriculture equipment...) try an angle grinder with a paper flap disk, maybe 220 grit. angle grinder is good for getting into pesky corners (like those found on agriculture equipment...)

it wasnt that bad

the rust on the handle was a thin layer of a blackish orange crud that was incredably hard to get off. the blade was just stained and had some grind marks and had a small patch of rust, i got that off with an abrasive buffing bit on my dremel tool. i got the stuf off the handle with a steel wire brush bit on the drill. not it shines:cool:
