Jury Finds FBI Agents Framed Former Cop By MIKE ROBINSON ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO (AP) - A former policeman who served 14 years in prison was awarded more than $6.5 million in damages Monday after a federal jury found that two FBI agents had framed him for murder and kidnapping.

Steven Manning, 54, spent eight years on death row in Illinois before his murder conviction was reversed, and several more years in prison in Missouri before charges in that state were dismissed.

He claimed in his civil suit that the agents framed him after he tried to stop working as an informant, according to his attorney, Jon Loevy.

Federal officials issued a statement saying they "respect the jury system, the work of this jury and its verdict." But they said they were "confident that the agents who were sued did not engage in any misconduct." Both agents remain with the FBI.

U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald and Richard K. Ruminski of the Chicago FBI office declined further comment.

Manning appeared relieved Monday. "It's a long, long way from death row to complete vindication," he said at a news conference.

Manning had left the Chicago police force and was working as a limousine driver and security guard when he was arrested.

He was convicted in 1992 of taking part in the 1984 kidnapping of two reputed Kansas City drug traffickers and was sentenced to two life terms plus 100 years. The next year, he was convicted of the 1990 murder of suburban Chicago trucking company owner Jimmy Pellegrino and was sentenced to death.

FBI agents Gary Miller and Robert Buchan investigated the Illinois case, and Buchan investigated the Missouri case.

I can't believe those guys still have a job. They should be the sweethearts of cell block C. :fire:

Well at least he got some cash out of it. There was a guy locked up here who only got 25000 dollars. The max he could collect under state law. That was for 12 years behind bars

We had a case here in Lexington last year where a FBI lab tech admitted she lied under oath in a capital murder case. IIRC, she "resigned." No jail time or punishment. The defendent (Shane Ragland) was convicted any way.

For thread like this I like to reflect on the Declaration of Independence where upon Jefferson gives support for separating from England by attacking the Tyrannical acts of King George one by one...here are just a few:
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

14 years, because of bad cops. If I mess up, no one will suffer for 14 years...Hope those agents get 14 years plus taken from their lives.

Wow, at least 4 out of 6 could be said about the CA state Attorney General.

When it's 6 of 6 do I open fire?

That guy deserves a lot more money.

Things like this are the only reason I am against the death penalty.

If guilty the agents involved deserve long jail sentences.

I have seen too many cases of the government lying under oath and getting away with it. They also seem to have a habit of destroying useful evidence. Such as evidence that had DNA on it being destroyed as soon as the technology to use the DNA evidence came out.

"That guy deserves a lot more money."

While I do agree with the sentiment, since jail time to his framers does nothing for him, has it occurred to you that those at fault won't pay that bill?

Perhaps another penny on the sales tax would cover it...

Some other suggestion for punishment of the guilty, not the uninvolved, seems to be in order.

Hey, if those two agents & the prosecutors had admitted to bollixing up the cases, they might have had their careers effected & had promotions delayed.

Or maybe not, since sending the wrong man to prison for 14 years does not seem to merit a reprimand.

So wait a minute. He gets his murder conviction dismissed based on the fact that he was framed by the feds. And it still takes SEVERAL YEARS to get him out of state prison?
