Dedicated .38 specials are just too darn handy!

One of the old boys found a box of light .38spl reloads he had done up years ago and just somehow snuggled under a box here and behind a box there and then he moved and ...

"Got something we need to shoot up" He said "Just bring some .38spl guns and we'll plink 'em up".

So the gang I was figuring a "box" of 50, maybe a couple of boxes of 50. No, this was a "box" about so big by so big with all these reloads.

"I'd get to cranking and dumping in that box, meaning to stick 'em in 50 round boxes, must have been Ma's fault, probably had to take the trash out, take the dogs for a walk or something..."

We know this old boy, had shot his reloads, and he is safe. He'd done these up as practice rounds for his wife, and daughter, and for new shooters.

Daughter done graduated HS, finished college, and if she ever figures out how babies are made, this here old boy and Ma are itching at the bit to do some serious spoiling.

"Ma I think had a sit down with that boy she married, he come out of the kitchen all red-faced last time they visited., run smooth into a door facing he did..."

I brought out my 1928 Colt Detective Special, and he brought out one about the same vintage, just a few years "newer". He brought out that pencil barrel Model 10of his and the rest of the gang, mostly ladies, and kids brought out Smiths, Colts, Rugers from old to newer, and snubby to longer.

Had a bag of tin cans, set up some cross ties and such and "something about knocking tin cans is good for the soul".

One kid had this Neon Pink Nerf dealie about 6' long , like kids play with around swimming pools and such. This had gotton torn (mom's close car doors too quick ) and "I'm getting bigger and outgrowing some stuff", meant it was okay to shoot it.

Who says dedicated .38spls, potting cans, with these mild wadcutters are not quality practice? Oh, nothing wrong with having fun while doing this either.

Kids, with a little assistance of course, can shoot these. Load one, shoot one. "Can I do two please!" Well why not ? Young lady a bit bigger and that mouth gets "set" like it does and - no need "un-setting" that mouth between loadings now is there?

"Whew, 6 of them are a bit much for me right now at one time, but I did pretty good huh?"

Yeah she did.

Kids are not dumb. "We gonna have to pick up cans - again? . These getting kinda tacky."

That Neon Pink piece is about tin can in diameter size. It was kinda funny having "Sneaky Snake" heading toward the Root Beer Can and shooting it.

"If we cut it, and poke it so it sticks up, we won't have to get the cans and set them back up".

Umm, okay makes sense. So cut Sneaky Snake into about 10" to 12" pcs, and then wedge down into two heavy boards, secure with some old rope and you have a neon pink tin can size target that takes hits, dances a bit, but ready to be shot again.

Like I said, kids ain't dumb, and yeah it was a great target and fun.

Kids also like to challenge adults. Manual can -opener and open the other end of some cans, set this onto sides and "can you shoot thru that can and not hit the insides?"

Kids get this innocent, sincere looking, big eyed question look, behind that look is snickering, and jeering, and "they can't do it" going on.

"Well, why don't you kids show us how?" I asked. :D

Kids will look at each other and have the funniest " well we didn't see that idea coming.:p "

Of course I did not get "one through it". They stuck mine out about 15 steps and stuck a ping pong ball inside and I basically made a mess of things.

I'm 6' tall, this target set up is set up for kids height, squatting not low enough <giggle, snort> and so just got on my knees because "you will be more kids size if you get on knees, here use this pad since your are old".

Old boy was laughing, sitting in a chair, mom's are no help, they laugh too.

I got this "hit the wood just below can and everything gets splintered real good" part down pat though. :D

All the brass dumped back in that old box and will be reloaded again. All the mess picked up and tossed in trash.

Just light loads, dedicated .38 spls of all sorts, sipping coffee, tea, sodas, some junk food and simple targets.

Try it sometime, real relaxing, a lot of fun, and don't care what anyone says, quality practice in my book.

Being out with quality folks don't hurt none either.

SM,

Thanks for sharing. I remember lots of sessions similar to that one growing up with my cousins, a 5 gallon bucket of .38's and 3 or 4 .357 blackhawks.
