Well, I was torn about this. I haven't been very fond of the NRA's politics of late, but I still feel they are an asset.....for the time being. I took advantage of the $600 offer to become a life member, mainly so I can gift my 3 year old son a life membership when the next "gift offer" comes around.
Anybody else take up the NRA on their life member "deals" for my reasoning or any other reason?

I guess I'm having buyers remorse, as I think the money would have been better used with the GOA.

Thoughts?

Personally, I think the NRA is a much better place to put your RKBA dollars. Membership dues are not used for political action, that is done with donations to the Institute for Legislative Action (ILA) the NRA's political arm.

I don't think so but if you do then send GOA 25 bucks, and SAF while you are at it.

They all seem to have different approaches to the problem and frankly I don't care which one "wins" as long as we the gun owners do.

Support them all and hope that one is paying attention when something wacky happens.

I don't really think your money would have been better spent with a less influential organization.

Just for clarity, your 3 year old is the life member not you, right??

That sounds like something I would do. My oldest son, now 11, is a member (not life) because I wanted the other magazine.

I became a Life Member before I had any kids, but even back then I was thinking about a way to protect their 2A rights when they did come along. That was about 35 years ago. I know now that was the right thing to do. You will too.

I remember when I got into a disagreement with Wayne LaPierre about the NRA policies. "They will never try to ban firearms in the USA." I am now a life member. Crow is best served with stuffing.

I bought in when Life Membership was $500 back in the 90's. I paid on the installment plan; I think they billed me $25 quarterly or something like that. Somewhere around here I think I still have the little Life Member pin they sent me after they received the last payment.
The NRA is the big dog in this fight. The other organizations seem to do little but solicit for money and produce inflammatory rhetoric to entertain their members.

No, I am the life member now. I may be wrong, but it's my understanding that about every year the NRA offers life members the opportunity to gift a lifetime membership to a family member for a substantial discount.....last I heard it was $300.
So, when they offer this "gift membership" next, I will be able to give my little one a lifetime membership for about 1/3 of the normal cost.

I became a life member a while back, and recently sent in payment to become an endowment member. They were offering some (most?) life members a $300 upgrade rather than the usual $1,000. I will also buy life memberships for my two boys whenever I get a good offer. They do have a very large membership base that they can use as leverage with the congress critters.

Just in case they somehow ban AR-15s again, I also bought a pair of S&W M&P-15s for my boys (to be given when they're older).

Like Joe Demko I went Life in '91 when it was $500. No remorse. In addition to all that I have learned through affiliation and the good work they have done in scrabbling with the emperor wannabes in the mire of DC, the NRA Life Member sticker on the car window alone may have saved me that much in traffic fines back in those early '90s.

To keep receiving American Rifleman while down here in rainy-world without paying a fortune in postage I changed the subscription to electronic. At first I hated to do that - love having the paper magazine. But the online version is automatically archived 12 months back and onliners can download issues in PDF form. Put them on discs, they are yours forever. Saves the NRA that much production cost too.

All in all, money well spent.

good decision, wow6599!

The NRA is one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in Washington, and members of Congress are reminded of its power from time to time.

No, they're not perfect, but they are effective. We all should support them, and the other firearm activist organizations, too.

Just finished the installment plan for my life membership (I did the $600.00 special as well)... after being an annual member for the last 32 years (and a law enforcement firearms instructor for 10 years, 1993 - 2003).

Happy to have done it, supporting education, history, and legislative awareness!

Go to:

www.NRAvalidate.org

If you put in your NRA ID#, it will give you the option of upgrading your membership (to Patron/Endowmwnt/etc.) at a HUGE discount price, and it will also give you the opportunity to sign up "family members" for Life Memberships for $300 each or annual memberships for $19.

I bought mine in 2009 for a special deal of $500 if paid in lump sum. Figured it was a good buy. Instead of buying a new pistol, I bought protection of my rights to buy many pistols for years to come.

I bought an 1-year NRA membership in May 2009 for $25. My original plan was to become a life member when they made me a $500 offer that an online friend had told me was their standard procedure. After finding I wasn't jumping at their $1,000 life offers, they finally sent me a $500 life offer last December. I became a life member in early January of this year at the age of 36.

I was a late bloomer who had zero experience nor even the slightest interest in guns till I was well into my 30s. I look back and wish I'd started shooting as a youngster as many others on this forum did. Sadly, nobody told me about the fun of guns back then.

Actually, guns seem more frustrating than fun as the more I learned (and continue to learn) about gun laws and regulations the more angry I become. When I hear some gun grabber saying "we need gun control" I'd like to reach through the computer and strangle them. These clueless folks act as if we don't have gun control, and a stunning amount of it at that.

Good Decision

I bought my life membership when I was 62 and then bought memberships for my 3 sons. The grandkids will be next. I've met many of the senior staff at NRA including Wayne and Chris Cox. Everyone in the building is extremely passionnate about our rights. Every NRA member is important to them and they recognize our value to the organization. Their National Firearms Museum has to be the best in the world. Tom

Do you only get the $300 life membership offer if you upgrade your current membership? Or can you get the discount for a family member even if you don't upgrade?

I'm not a life member but my son is. I should have him look into this and see if he can get me the $300 offer.

I just went to upgrade my membership and was offered a price of $500...for those who care. I am then offered the opportunity to enroll family for $19/yearly. When I can afford it I'm definitely becoming a lifetime member.

IMO you did the right thing. Good for you.

I'd just have him look into it. The offers seem to change all the time. I've been able to get a few people $300 memberships but I haven't seen that offer in a few months.

You guys are fortunate to have such rights. Hey, what happened to Manifest Destiny? You left a big part of the continent unclaimed. Hurry up and finish the job!

I may just get my membership.
