Just bought a 1911!!!!

I bought a Ruger Single-Six a few weeks ago, and I absolutely loved it.

Until I took it out and shot it... it just didn't work for me, I didnt like how it pointed and how it felt as I was shooting it... anyhow I was still under my 30 days so I took it back into the gunshop and was going to trade it for something.... make that anything.

I had been thinging about the Ruger semi-autos and looked at a P97 & P95. while I like the way they look and I hear they are excellent pistols, they felt a little too top heavy for me, not to mention the poly they used in the frames felt really... well... cheap. Like a toy, nothing like the poly on my XD. I was very disappointed, because they were right in my price range.

But as I scanned the racks I came upon a plain ol' 1911. As soon as I held it I knew it was leaving with me. Ive handled a few 1911s and have shot one before, but never the basic GI model. I am hopeful.

Its a used Rock Island Armory it came with 3 mags, 2 sets of grips and a case it was going for $329, it cost me more because I lost some $$ on the trade in value of the single six but I am happy with it so far.

Suggestions: Skateboard tape on the front strap!
Wilson mags(you can go nuts with a Wilson's catalog...beware!), good leather(www.raftersleather.com or milt sparks, many more good companies!).
.22 Conversion unit..Ciener, Marvel...whateer...saves money in the long run, lots of good, cheap fun.

I handled a Rock Island Armory 1911 just yesterday. It seemed to be ok, decent trigger, tolerances seemed ok, could not turn the bushing with my fingers, so I don't know about its insides. Overall, it seemed like a reasonable copy of a military 1911-A1, but with a lowered ejection port and the barrel feed ramp appeared to be throated for hollow points and semi-wadcutters.

I bought a RIA several months ago too.Just to see if I really liked the 1911 platform.I will concure that they are highly addictive.Well you can see by what I did to mine.

Well lets see,from top to bottom,I've replaced the rear sight with a CMC drop-in sight(not real happy with it and I'll probably go with a set of Novack's). A new barrel bushing,a commander hammer and re-radioused the frame tangs for a beavertail grip.A CMC slide release,thumb safety,trigger and mag release,along with a S&A mag well funnel.I've polished the internals and done a trigger job to get it down to a crisp 3lbs.I've still got to do some melding on the mag well and will have to dovetail the front sight for the new sights.After that's done I'm thinking about trying the Gun-Kote in the new "Blue" finish.It shot @3.5in groups right out of the box but I havn't gotten to the range since I did the trigger and bushing work.(damn cold weather)

Sounds good, I am going to break out the ol' Brownell's catalog tonight and see if theres anything I cannot live without.

But before I go crazy, I want to shoot it. I dont mind the cold, hell I gone out shooting in the snow! I have so little time for shooting, I will do it any chance I get, weather permitting or not.
