I don't post much in here, but after using Jim March's excellent advice to pick up 3 revolvers in 2 months, perhaps I should start! I'm attaching a picture of the latest, found sitting forlorn at a gun show while a buddy was doing the paperwork on his first gun (a 1911):

Serial is A84###, and please forgive the bad lighting.

Got to take it to the range right after the show, and it put a big ol' grin on my face. :D That little gun has a bit of a snap to it for a .38 Special! Once I saw my first shot was dead-on in the target, though, I decided I could easily live with a little kick. It had come with Pachmayr rubber grips which I used at the range, but they threw in those dandy little service grips as well, and as soon as I got home I threw them on. Curious to see what the difference is using those!

Any special tips on care and feeding for this critter? I've heard some people warn against rapid-fire with Colt revolvers and I certainly don't want to knock it out of time.

Keep the +Ps out of it or keep them to a bare miminum and it will be shooting long after you are gone.

It's a beauty. My Colt Detective Special was pretty beat, but it had been a duty weapon somewhere, and saw a huge amount of use. Moderate loads and good, kind treatment are indicated.

They are fine guns. You are fortunate to have it.

Colt Detective Special

I took my newly purchased Detective Special to the range yesterday and put several rounds thru it. (It too had been put back in a corner and was not getting any attention from buyers) It shoots a little to the left but not enough to be worried about.

Almost all shooting was with standard pressure 38's. I did shoot 3 rounds each of Speer's new 135 gr. +P+ and CorBon 110 gr. DPX just to see POI.

Just got a Tex Shoemaker pancake, from ebay, and it holds the gun close and you hardly even know its there.

Good luck

I've had about 5 agents, I have one and three Cobras right now. I'd use 158 grain RN non plus power, as that gun is probably sighted in for it, at the range (Range ammo!) . I carry 158grain swchp +p in them ! :D

Colt advised that these light alloy guns (Cobra, Agent) be returned to the factory for inspection after firing 1,000 rounds of Plus P ammo. For steel frames (Detective and Police Positive Special), the limit was 3,000 rounds before inspection.

You son of a ........ :D :D :D

You're hunting in my territory. Congrats though that is a beautiful looking piece of hardware. I only wish I had gotten to it first. Maybe next time.

Shoot that baby till she can't take no more. If she passed March's checklist then she'll be up for it.

Again congrats.

I love my Detective Special. I designed my own holster for it (similar to my IWB for the M1911, with a leather shield between gun and body to allow it to be carried under a T-shirt.) It shoots to point of aim with both my powder-puff wad cutter loads and Winchester self-defense 135 grain hollow points.

These revolvers are hard to beat -- Colt really dropped the ball when they quit making them.

I just picked up a mint Cobra made in 1968 and I love it. I am looking for suggestions for grips as the standard grips are a little small for me. Does anyone have any suggestions for aftermarket grips? BTW I am looking into Paul Fitz offerings but wanted to know if any other options exist.

Thanks.

You're hunting in my territory.

:neener:

Sorry, HiWayMan, but I even got to the show late! My buddy spent the night before enjoying himself a little too much and called two hours after he was supposed to show up complaining of the vineyard flu. :scrutiny:

Serves him right, though. He ended up shooting .45 with a hangover.

Thanks for the kind words and advice, everyone!

Well, since I sacrificed a perfectly good white t-shirt to a hot light bulb in order to get some diffuse lighting, I figured I'd share a couple of the results (the pics can be clicked on for 1024x768 sized versions)

I love the agent, I picked this one up from GA last year and I carry it quit a bit.

1971 Colt Detective Special

What is it with Colt .38 Special snubby's as of late? :uhoh:

Heck, I just picked up a 99+ per center 2" nickel Colt Detective
Special (2nd issue, '47 to 72) myself. Mine doesn't even have a
drag line on the cylinder; and my ole' trading bud even threw in
a unused, unlined black Bianchi leather holster with it! :D No sir
I'm not planing on this weapon serving as a CCW piece, for I
have too many other's for that~ :)

BTW, All of the ones shown appear to be fantastic; sorry but I
can't post a pic at this time. I'm sure we all will enjoy these
little "prancing ponies"! :D
