Hi, i just bought a marlin 336w from a gun shop. but i havn't picked it up yet. the receipt says the serial number on it and it starts with an MR, does this mean it is a remington made rifle? It says that it was made in new haven, ct on the barrel. but i have heard that they still use that stamp? let me know what you guys think. Thanks!!:uhoh:

I've never heard of that S/N prefix. The best way to tell is by the proof marks stamped into the barrel. A Marlin-made 336 will have the "JM" proofmark, and a Remington-made 336 will have the "REP" proofmark. It is in an oval circle.

I just bought one as well w/ the REP in a oval on the barrel and an MR prefix on the serial, so Im wondering why Marlins are sometimes made my Remington?

ANy preference between the two? If so Why?

Marlin closed its doors this year. Remington was bought out by Freedom Group and in 2008 they bought Marlin too. The Marlin models are now being made in Remington factories by workers who are new to making them. Many people think that the newest models are of a slightly lower quality. I've seen some that looked perfectly fine & others that looked a bit shoddy. I prefer to buy used Marlin 336's. I love the pre-1982 models, but I'll buy up to 2008.
