lol, just though I'd post this for the sake of showing this Marlin I got back in early 2017 it was a gun show find. Excellent like new 336w JM made in 2001 and paid a little less than a new Marlin goes for

Tried Winchester 150 and 170gr, Remington 150gr and 170gr, Federal 150gr and 170gr. It likes Winchester 150gr the best with in coming 2nd Federal 150gr or 170gr. Averages a little over 2 inch groups @ 100 yds in five shot groups with Winchester 150gr.

I have Fiocchi and Sellier & Bellot ammo coming gonna try that also.

Don't fall prey to the Monarch ammo.
I bought 3 boxes because I wanted brass and it was on sale for $6 per box. It was between 4&5 moa.
I'm curious how the Sellier & Bellot does for you. It's been accurate in each caliber I've tried it in.

Almost forgot. That's a beautiful rifle.

Comparing it to my Winchester 94 made in the 70's my dad bought for me when I was 15 years old, the Marlin is more robust, it is more accurate, the loading gate is easier, but the Winchester has a smoother action. However I have another 94 a Canadian made in 1967 and it is about as accurate as the Marlin.

And the older Marlin or "JM", just do seem better than the newer ones sorry to say.

Monarch shoots about 3” in mine at 125 yds. I’m not disappointed in it for the price. I haven’t reloaded any of the brass in 30-30 yet but I have formed a few 7-30 cases from it and that was fine.

You seem to have a couple of cats who appear to be contemplating turning in their claws for your Marlin!;)

Nice rifle btw. Marlins aren't my "cup of tea," and the forend on yours shows why; those "chubby" forends, I don't like. They're why I went to Winchester. But I have seen Marlin's with nice thin forends. Plus, Marlin's have the same historic pedigree and no one can say they do not have nice strong actions.

Because they do!

Enjoy!

Mine is an old micro groove. It runs 1.25-1.5 with factory ammo except for that stuff.
I liked the brass and at the price, it was cheaper than buying new brass.

FWIW; Monarch is Privi. Just box branded Monarch for Academy Sports.

Good brass, mediocre bullets.
Try different weights. Many guns shoot better with 170gr ammo.
Don’t judge accuracy till you’v run 200-300 rounds through it. Takes that many to break in the barrel.
Trigger is easily stoned to 3.0lbs or less by gunsmith familiar with the M1911. Don’t waste $$ on a happy trigger.
There several minor tweaks to magazine tube tension that will help accuracy.

Great rifle. The only way to see how a certain brand of ammo will group is to put a scope on the rifle. There is too much error when group testing with buck horn sights. I shoot lever action silhouette and we shoot with open sights. When I get a new lever action rifle I put a scope on it to test my loads.

Gotta kind of disagree with that, even with iron sights testing different ammo I can see differences, either in accuracy or area of impact. Will a scope help accuracy of course but using a front rest and front sight focus with the iron sights a pattern can be consistant.

I agree with this is you know how to use consistent sight picture.
If you are running 2" at 100 yards, you are doing better than some people do with a scope at that range.

Cats seem to approve.I have a JM marked 30AS that I bought at a pawn shop for 150.00 that's nice, accurate, I put a Weaver Classic K4 4x38 scope on it. hdbiker

No, the cats are discussing 9-lives vs 6rd capacity. 9-shot revolvers (and autos) were developed as “catshooters” you know!

Well I tried S&B and Fiocchi ammo. Didn't get great results although I just tried 5 rounds each. Fiocchi ammo I love their handgun ammo but I'm not liking their rifle ammo so much after trying 30-30 and .30 carbine ammo by them. Fiocchi is hot ammo in handgun but their rifle ammo is mild loaded.

S&B didn't give good results, and it was hard functioning the lever with it. So looks like Winchester 150 gr is my prefered ammo for the Marlin.

Fiocchi 223 77smk load is good. I haven't tried anything else.
The S&B group is disappointing.
I do like Winchester factory ammo.

Well you know how it goes one gun can like a different ammo over the other sometimes even the same gun series by same manufacture but just a different gun. My Winchester 94 has always done best with Federal ammo but soon I'm trying out Fiocchi and S&B in it. In my surplus rifles, 7mm, 8mm and .303 British and such S&B has always been good.

Even had S&B shot good fact is I had to force the action open and close with it when all other ammo function fine.

But I'm glad I got this JM Marlin and a decent deal, really well made rifle so far, the sights and trigger and loading gate are superior to both my 94 Winchester but Winchester has a better smoother loading and ejecting action. Love me a Winchester but Marlin does have some ups on Winchester in my opinion.

I only hope new Marlin is back to making such a nice rifle, some say yes, some say no as I have read on here.

I got some old Federal 150 gr. from the 1960's that the Border Patrol traded Customs for some .22 match ammo. It was really nice ammo & they actually sealed their primers. I used Remington & Winchester 150 gr. for decades & recently rediscovered Federal. They still seal their primers & I get more recoil which, to me, equates in more mv & accuracy is top notch. Marlin made one of the best deer rifles of all time if you ask me.

I had a Marlin 336W much like yours many years ago. Was a well built rifle but I didn't have it for very long as I had to sell a number of guns to pay for school.

It looks like your rifle does have the Cat's Seal of Approval!
