After much on-line research and handling many at the LGS', I just ordered my 1st AR. It's a Spikes Tactical ST15 MLLE. My decision came down to this for $900 or a Colt LE6920 for $1200. Yes, it would have been nice to get the gold standard, but I figured I'd save $300 and use it towards ammo/extra mags. Looking for opinions from experienced AR aficianados. Which of these 2 would you have opted for? Also, anyone with Spike's experience, let me know if you're happy with it. Everything I've read so far has been positive.

Happy with my Spikes upper. Shoot it and have fun. Leave the Internet Voodoo to the KoolAid crowd.

I've had my m4le for about a year now, and its been great it eats all the cheap Russian ammo I can feed it. I did have a problem with the bcg after the first range trip, I called tom and the new one was in my mailbox in 2 days

I've only had my M4LE for 3 months or so but I like it a lot.
Runs steel, bronze or whatever.
No malfunctions in (only) about 250 rounds.

You did good with Spikes...

My upper runs great.

I've had my Spike's ST15 mid-length for a few weeks now. It's my first AR, as well.

I've only got a chance to put about 130 rounds through it, but I really like it. Took me a few rounds to get it sighted in (using the Magpul MBUS rear sight it came with), but it's working great.

I'd like to swap out the pistol grip & butt stock with something a little more comfortable, but other than that I don't see changing much. I wouldn't mind mounting getting a scope for it sometime.

I have a Spikes M4LE upper (with 9" BAR rail) and I love it. Very nicely finished and 100% reliable so far. It's proven to be very accurate as well.

Thanks for all the feedback so far. Great that everyone seems to really like their Spikes. I ordered mine from J&G because they had in stock and I should receive next week. Theirs came with detachable handle, guess that's how J&G ordered them from Spikes. I think I like the handle, but plan to get rear flip sight too for options.

Here's mine BTW.

It is a nice scope, but I got the point blank reticle which is hard to use for hunting coyotes. It will make a great scope for tactical purposes. I will be swapping it out for a 2-8x scope within the year.

spikes does seem to be getting pretty good reviews these days... but $1200 for a 6920? i thought they were going for closer to $980 these days...

Well, my LGS, which is right down the street from Spike's place, had a 6920 for $1150 and the m4le for $820.
My lgs doesn't always have the best deal but I have bought quite a few guns from them. With ffl and shipping included I nearly always get the same price as online stores.

While this is true, the standard 6920 has been "out of stock" for a good bit now from G&R Tactical. It's been the best price though, even better than Bud's. *didn't check Bud's today though*

OP: I have the same model ST that you will, and it's been an absolute joy. You'll enjoy the heck out of it, and the lifetime warranty is an added bonus and not often found from other AR providers. For $850+transfer+shipping vs. $950-$1050+transfer+shipping, it's the best rifle in that price range short of the 6920's historical reputation.

FWIW, I ordered my Spike's mid-length from AIM Surplus for $770, free shipping. So add in the transfer fee and the Oregon background check, and total cost was $805. I think I got a pretty good deal.

kas1981, when did you buy? Just curious because I did see this price but they were all sold out. I found several for around $800 but everyone was sold out. J&G were only ones I found in stock. It'll be interesting to see what they get listed for at AIM, JOEBOB's, etc. when they get some back in stock.

Dang, just got my question answered. Joeboboutfitters just got more today and still selling for $800 and free shipping. Could have saved $100 if was patient. Oh well. Still excited to get.

They were just in stock on AIM a couple days ago. You just have to be quick. You can call JoeBobs and see what they have coming and when. His CS is first rate.

Another positive experience here with my AR15 with Spikes lower and buffer kit (different upper and barrel). I've only shot about 150rds so far but it shoots bulleye with the iron sights it came with - and thats saying something because i'm not an expert shooter by any means!

Update on my Spike's. Picked it up a little over a week ago and have had it to the range the past 2 Friday's. Really, really like it. No regrets at all. In fact, my Dad also wanted one but isn't the type to really look into what's best to buy, so I told him my final 2 after researching were the Spikes and the Colt LE6920. He went with the Colt and we both went shooting with them yesterday. I have to say, I like mine better so I feel good about the purchase. Got the impression my Dad liked mine better too. I guess mainly though because mine was a mid-length and you could definitely tell the difference in the kick between the 2. Mine was pretty smooth. Both are really nice though. Now I need to consider upgrades. I'm thinking maybe a 9" Troy or YMH aluminum handrail, maybe iron folding sights too. Any suggestions on what I should do 1st is appreciated.
