Opinions appreciated on these uppers

I've been researching complete uppers for my first AR build and have decided on one of these, I think.. This rifle will be used for basic plinking, home defense and shtf. Im leaning towards the spikes. I like the 14.5 in profile and have heard a lot of positives about the dynacomp muzzle break. If anyone has an opinion on either I would love to hear it, also open to any other suggestions. Price range around 800.00. I know this is a common question so sorry for that :banghead:. Thanks...

That 14.5 will be a SBR, and require a $200.00 tax stamp from Uncle Sam.

Incorrect, sir. Muzzle device is permanently attched for an over 16" length. No NFA rules apply for either of these uppers. You are good to go.


I bought my only AR upper from AIM and have had no problems with the quality (1 problem I did have was caused by 'operator error' - myself)

True that, my bad, I did not catch the "permanent attached" part. Not SBR territory. The other is 16 inches so not a problem. I would get the 16 incher. I really want an SBR, but the extra 200 bucks....pay to play I guess...I do have an eye on the Sig "hand brace" for AR pistols...looks just like a M4 stock, but no adjustment...but allows the short barrel without tax stamp, can be used like a rifle shot "Chicken wing" style, sort of. Makes little sense, I just want one!
 
Do you ever plan on changing out the muzzle device? If not then there is no disadvantage to getting the Spike. Spikes makes a quality product as well. No first hand experience but a couple co-workers have spoken very well about them. I do agree that is a bit pricey but it isn't unreasonable to a quality upper with a rail and BCG.

If you keep your guns for a long time then you'll never look back at the price difference and care, but it is still $250.
 
$200 is nothing when you consider that if the NFA fees had been linked to inflation, it would cost you around $3150 for your SBR. Be glad Congress didn't think of that.
 
I really don't have an opinion on either, but for that price you can buy a first class upper such as the Rock River Arms Competition or RRA Delta CAR for those that like the more military looking bits.

Personally even in an upper for plinking I really like accuracy, and RRA puts out very accurate stuff. My RRA ATH uses the same cryo treated barrel as the Competition model and is incredibly accurate, it also never seems to start walking the bullets as it heats up in a 3 gun match.
