Well, I bought my other half an engagement ring, so now I can buy guns again and not be in the doghouse ;) Oh happy days! I sent out for my C&R license almost a month ago, so I should be getting that soon, and I have a long list of "to buys". Well, I decided it was time to buy a new gun and decided that it was time to enter the genre of the 1911's.

I have shot some Kimbers and I was pleased with them, but not having another 1911 to compare them with I didn't know whether that was Kimber nice or 1911 nice. Well, I decided that I'd start with a 1911 that seems to please quite a few people on here, the Springfield 1911 GI-Milspec. I found one used gently, probably 200 or less rounds through it for a decent price and jumped on it. I'm going to go shooting today, so I'm excited...my SW99 .45 has competition now.

I decided once I took it home I'd attempt a 1911 disassembly...Well my finance and myself were in our office and I shot the recoil spring plug out, hit the ceiling and I think made Amanda nearly wet herself. Well, the rest of the disassembly went ok, gave it a wipe down and a little CLP along the rails. I then reassembled it...the slide release was a little tricky, but after a little practice *I think* that I have the hang of it.

The trigger is pretty nice...definitely a world of difference over the SW99. It is better than my Steyr also. Now...I just have to feed it!

"I shot the recoil spring plug out, hit the ceiling"

Now all you need to do is the "idiot mark" with the slide stop ( :banghead: ), be careful

Well, shot about 150 rounds through the 1911 today. Just the typical cons of the GI mil-spec, that being the short sights and a pretty small tear drop from the grip safety. I have pretty big hands and I did get a couple bites, but not that bad.

It shot right on and was quite pleasant. Cleaning it tonight was pretty easy also...seems like it is a keeper.

**Edited for corectness ;)**

The GI doesn't have a beavertail. The grip safety is a GI-style "teardrop". A beavertail grip safety is different from what you have.

Now that you're trying to get into the club, you'd better learn the proper speak :)

This was my first steel framed auto that I shot more than a magazine or two through...kind of surprised me how much more the metal frames heat up compared to the polymer one's I have.

I also noticed a couple of the screws on the grip loosened up as I was shooting, I'm not sure how tight they were to start out with, but I tightened them up while I was cleaning. How often do these work loose? Should I locktite them?

Welcome to the club. You made a good choice for a first 1911. Keep the check book and credit cards handy as I'm sure that this will be the first of many. Be sure to check out http://www.1911forum.com for more 1911 reading.

Enjoy your new toy. :)

At least you didn't let it put an idiot mark on your forehead. Or worse put out an eye.

I'm thinking of picking up another WW2 because I ended up giving my NIB one to my brother for X-mas. :cuss:

Oh, and make sure you put a thousand or so rounds through it before you start thinking about upgrades. That way you'll have an idea of what you really want to do to it.

The phrase Sistema 1927 immediately comes to mind. Check out cruffler.com

1911's are like Harley's. You can build one from scratch with all the aftermarket stuff available!

I would recommend against lock tight on the grip screws. The reason is that you will unscrew the grip screw bushing then you will have a real PITA.

I would lock tight the grip screw bushing and then tighten the grip screws good the next day.

I haven't seen the stainless GI yet in person. Only the parkerized with the plastic grips. Mine fortunately has the wood US, which I think looks and feels better.

It seems like when the shops get used or new in on the Springy's they leave pretty fast.
