What gets messed up? How bad is it?

I've only owned my 1911 (shoots great!!!) a couple days, and I've already done this a couple times. I'll quit, but how bad did I mess up?

When you release the slide on most other guns they slide home with a lot of mechanical sounds in the way and hit relatively softly... at least they SOUND like they hit reasonably softly. On a 1911 you've probably found that they slam home with very little resistance and produce almost a "metal ball on a glass table" sort of CLACK! There's some serious windup and metal to metal action there that just doesn't seem to occur with most other guns.

Anyhow, the range I've been shooting at has a lot of 1911 fans. One of the tricks I've picked up from them is that if you're looking over an unloaded 1911 and release the slide use your other hand to ease it into battery and don't just let it CLACK! into place. Then do the dry fire, let everyone oooooh and aaaah over the sound and trigger feel. The key being to ease it into place.

I gather from talking to the guys about it that it's not the end of the world if it happens now and then but over time a steady habit of this will peen the metals out of shape where they impact.

Only trigger I've ever felt that comes close to that of my single action 1976 Colt Python was that of a Les Baer 1911. Just nothing else like it ........

Yep, I'm at seven Kimbers and counting. Looking at number eight :)

(Not counting the one Charles Daly, two Springfields, three Colts and four Paras that came and went...)

Two Kimbers, four Colts, IMHO - the best design for an automatic ever. My 1929 Colt has seen 200K + rounds through it just from my use (acquired in 1972). I have some "others" but the 1911s are the mainstay. For CCW the compact 3" are the ticket. Kimber makes the all black "New Agent" with melt treatment and trench sight. I added a Crimson Trace laser to mine to make night defense totally intimidating. My full size Colt stainless is less than 2 years old, and has 25K + rounds through it.

I know the feelin'

I love my Taurus PT1911SS also.......can't imagine what it'd be like to shoot a Kimber Cadillac!!!!
