Just can't replace my J-frame .38

J-frames are what real people actually carry every day.

All the others, is just what they SAY they carry EVERY day

darn it...I thought I was armed all of these years.

I THOUGHT that was a gun that I was carrying but since I don't even own a J frame I guess I was unarmed

:neener:

I have 2 LCR's. One in 38 and one in 357. I carry the 357 in a pancake holster everyday. I was carrying my glock 26 iwb everyday but it was just too bulky. A snub in an owb can literally be on my person from when I pull my pants on in the am till I take them off for bed. That means that every waking moment its on my side. When I head out of the house I slip the LCR 38 in the pocket and roll on. 10 rounds plus a speed strip.

The orange on my front sight is not painted on....the fixed front sight had a portion cut out, and the orange material was slid in there.

Generally the second gun I'll have new shooters shoot is the J Frame. The females usually like the gun and quickly get good with it.

I posted this before but it's a favorite S&W J Frame story.

Some friends were shooting.

I taught the two girls and boy to shoot.
The girls were shooting J Frames at paper targets and the boy was shooting five hanging, spinning targets.

I walked up behind the center girl. She said, I shot my brothers (hanging) target a couple times but he didn't notice.
I said, Shoot the string, he will notice that.

So, next shot she shot the string with the little J Frame.

Here, she and I were laughing because we were the only ones in on the joke.
Her brother was telling his father, I don't know what happened, I wasn't even shooting at that target.:D

M2 Carbine, Great job teaching the next generation of shooters and gun owners.
My hat is off to you Sir.

M2...the one young lady (grandaughter?) that I have seen pics at your range, seems like she is turning into one heck of a shot.

You should be proud.

What a great gift you are giving to the future by teaching them to shoot. My hat is off to you.

(btw...the young man still has his finger in the trigger guard.)

Friend's 16 year old daughter. No kids of my own.
Yes, she gets better all the time. The day we were shooting this rocking target, with J Frames, she beat both me and her Dad.
I told her it wasn't considered polite to beat someone with their own gun.:D

Yeah we had a talk about that.:)
The boy knows better.

Thanks, but I enjoy it as much as they do.

We did go through a lot of 38 Special last year. I load only 158gr LSWC full loads. I give the shooters the ammo and I about ran out. I loaded up another three thousand plus rounds of 38 Special, so we are ready to give those J Frames a workout when the temperature cools off a little.:)

bob,

Still have and carry my 642. Yes I have a TCP, but it's a backup ONLY.

And M2,

The J will do to 100 yards, just go prone and a very tiny bit of elevation to the front sight.

I know in my geezer years I won't be selling my very first CCW gun when CHL started here. That's my old 640 Centennial .38 stainless revolver. Red insert front sight put in by a smith, did the action work myself, and it shoots right on the money.

Lots of other guns will come and go, but that J won't. That and it's mate, a Smith M66 2 1/2 combat magnum I got many many years ago.

Both those guns have Secret Service stocks and they are well worth the money those stocks!

I have carried a Glock 27 daily for years and still hear the siren song of the J frame (or similar small revolver). I think this year I might give in. I need a smaller backup.

I get asked to settle 'what is best for off duty or backup?' questions from time to time . I always answer 'the one you will carry every day.' That's your J frame. Well built, reliable & accurate, what more does anyone want?

I'm really happy to hear such positive comments on revolvers specifically the J frames. I have a model 60-15 stainless 357 mag sitting in layaway, my first revolver. I saw it, I held it and I bought it. That's how natural it felt in my hand. Yes I was concerned over only having 5 shot capacity. But as I said it felt so natural in my hand I couldn't resist.

Real happy to have read this thread, thanks to all that expressed their opinions.

By the way although I've never owned a revolver before I have never felt underarmed carrying a Glock model 30 with 10 + 1 = 45 acp rounds. Great semi auto pistol in a small tigh package so it's easy to conceal, that's gone bang everytime I've pulled the trigger.

Can't wait to get that SW out of layaway!!!

There is no replacing the j-frame. It's probably one of the greatest concepts for defensive pistols out there. You can carry it everywhere. As close to being 100% reliable. You can fire the thing from your coat pocket. You can shoot it from weird positions. It will fire reliably even when you don't have a proper grip on it. And it allows for contact shots.
I say.. if you have an GLOCK subcompact (like the G27), and LCP, and the beloved j-frame...... you would probably have your CCW needs covered.

I have not tried to replace my 642. I bought a Glock to supplement it, but it will not come close to replacing it.

This thread popped up at just the right time since I'm shopping for my first CCW. I'm going back and forth between a 442 and LCR. The LCR has a better trigger, more comfortable grip, and is lighter, but the 442 is smaller/easier to conceal and has better fit and finish (metal guns have a certain appeal). I know, I know, the correct answer is both.;)

This gun will be exclusively pocket carry for the hot Texas weather. If it is cool enough to wear heavier shirt/jacket, I might go with an SP101 or SR9c.

As great as some autos out there are, the simplicity, function, and elegance of a revolver will never go out of style.

I don't see the problem with carrying a J frame daily. You post makes it seem like there's something wrong with not wanting to "replace" your J frame. I have more than a few J frames and they will all stay with me and be carried for the foreseeable future.
