Bought myself a nice little 21st birthday present with the birthday cash....Rock Island Armory 1911A1. I'd been doing my research for a little while and settled on the RIA for its price and solid reputation. Took it to the range this evening....WOW! I had never fired a handgun in my life before, but had always loved the 1911 for it's looks and the way it seems to fit my hand perfectly. The thing seems incredible accurate, it's easy to use, and that .45ACP packs quite a punch!

And so it begins. Welcome and would like to say I'm sorry for the money you are getting ready to spend on your new adiction. Oh yes, you now have the bug. Don't fight it and it will be much eaiser on you.

After many years I joined this fraternity as well this year with a Les Baer followed by a NightHawk Talon Bob Tail and am darned pleased with both.
This is also my preferred caliber after fooling with 40s and 9mms...other than 44 Spcl and 45 LC but now were talking revolvers...Blessings.

I have 2 RIAs and the accuracy and functionality are beyond what I would expect for the price. Fun to shoot and carry. I do not leave home without my Rock. Enjoy! ...and get ready for the next one, they multiply...

Congrats!

I've heard really good things about those guns, you probably won't find much better for the price. I almost bought one a while back but something else came along, I'll probably pick one up one of these days. I've got a Colt 1911 that I've had for years and I really love, but I've been looking at getting one of those RI ones just because they have a very classic look and they ones I've held seemed really nice.

Every gun enthusiast should have at the very least one 1911:cool:

Real men shoot 1911's.Read up on the history,it's really interesting. You made a good choice wwith the Rock. Now, go buy a Rock Tactical!!

Welcome to the Dark Side.

Good choice, by the way. The RIA pistols are getting very good marks. I've carried a CD made by the same company for a long time now.

What a way to start out shooting! The first handgun I ever fired was my great grandfathers Colt 1911 from the war. You started with the best in my opinion and it will be hard to justify anything less :)

Two primary concerns:
1. ammo prices - I'm still a college student and reloading is impractical for me at this point. My friend told me that OutdoorMarksman had great deals on .45ACP; definitely planning to shop around some. I can already tell that this thing will be addictive to shoot.
2. The 1911 acquisition bug. The guy at the dealer I bought it from had 17 of them and I can already tell why. I want to pick up a 9mm or .40S&W as my next handgun, but a nice stainless-steel commando-length 1911 wouldn't be bad in the near future;)

SpeedAKL,

Let me tell you what may lie ahead....

You are going to want a slightly more compact version and will find a "commander" size gun you absolutely must have.

And then you will get your concealed carry permit and wonder whether a compact 3" 1911 might make for easier carry.

And then you are going to conclude that shooting beats reloading and find that 1911s also come in 9mm, which is much less expensive than .45, particularly when purchased in lots of 1000 (which you will find does not last very long).

And then the 9mm "commander" is next (lightweight and steel frame)...

And then a subcompact 1911 9mm....

And then someone will tell you about the coolest 9mm 1911 of all time, the Springfield EMP, and that it ONLY costs $1000 or so....

And that is if you just stick with the 1911 platform. I won't even tell you what you will want to buy when you expand your interests into the areas of DAO, safe action, and DA/SA firearms...

I am 53, own in excess of 40 handguns, and still have not run out of handguns I absolutely NEED!

Boarhunter

Ps: Did I mention last month's acquisition? A cool AR-24....full size. And I bet their compact size might make a nice carry gun....I might just need to take a look.

ha, boarhunter is absolutely right. i'm not even as far along as the OP. My first 1911 will be a graduation gift to myself. a little incentive to get out of here! in the mean time, there are so so many other choices....

Congratulations! I just got my first colt off layaway so I know how excited you are. I wish you the best.

I did not even mention to SpeedAKL the absolutely necessary ACCESSORIES he will have to get to "improve" (i.e., dress up) his 1911s. New sights, grips, mag wells, triggers, etc., etc., etc......... I have 5 sets of 1911 thin Alumagrips all engraved "MF" (figure that one out), and fear the day when I have to get more 1911s, just so I can get more fancy grips....

Life is good.

SpeedAKL,

I'm sure you'll alway look back at that purchase with glee; RIA 1911s are among the best out there!

One suggestion though... if you have average sized paws, you might want to toss those strange smooth grips she came with and replace 'em with some nice checkered grips like the ones I put on mine. They're all over the place and could be found for $14-$20 a pair if you shop around. For me, they made all the difference in ergonomics... and perhaps in aesthetics as well.

Here's my RIA that feeds 200gr SWCs without any issues.
