In my endless internet wandering researching my next deer/elk/moose/bear/big foot gun I keep thinking it would be nice to have a little fun gun, kinda like a .22 but center fire, with good ballistics.

Here is what has been floating around my mind; A small caliber center fire bolt action with GOOD open sights.

It seems all bolt rifles that come with open sights are short radius, almost a thrown on afterthought. If that's not hard enough I'd like to get it left handed but that is not a must.

I'm envisioning 200-300 yard pop can killing machine. In the past I've always taken my hunting rifles very seriously. Yet my fondest non hunting gun memories are at a buddies farm with a pile of rifles challenging each other to shoot stuff at crazy distances in crazy conditions. Or playing pigeon sniper after setting a land speed record with the spreader. (Barn cats gotta eat too)

Or...I just load more ammo for my scoped bolt gun. I dunno, this place does crazy things to my mind. What do you guys think?

I am thinking X-Bolt in .223. Someone at the range told me they can be ordered with Williams sights from the Browning plant. If they are the same sights that used to sit on all their rifles in a past not so far behind, they are pretty decent sights IMHO. I liked the hood on those. It is available for right brained folks, I think. :)

As an alternate, have you ever fired a TC Arms, Contender carbine? Yes, it is a single shot, but they come with a 1 MOA guarantee.

Also, Savage "Hog Hunter", is chambered in .223 Rem, and comes with sights! Very nice little rifle, and I hear very accurate, but right hand only.

kinda sounds like your wanting a Ruger GSR...will cover all the needs on your list..is available in left hand....in flat blue or stainless steel with laminate stock or poly/glass....with factory peep sight...."Ruger.com"....Ruger scout rifle

Would that Williams sight be back on the receiver or way up on the barrel where the factory rear is?

What you'e described is a bolt action high-power rifle. Not just good sights, but match sights, made for position shooting.

That contender is a cool gun. I did not know they made a carbine. What I'm seeing on both that and the savage is the rear sight is forward in the barrel. I'm looking for something like a peep on the receiver.

The Japanese Type 38 carbine is what you want. I now have three of them and would buy as many as I could find if there were models in good condition on the market. The 6.5mm round in any length cartridge seems to be very accurate.

That's pretty close but a grand for a ruger bolt gun, not saying it's a bad rifle but to pay more for that ruger than a tikka or browning or Winchester would be tough.

I'll take a gander but I'm assuming it's a big heavy milsurp? I'm looking for a light, small caliber rifle.

Edit: yes it is, and the rear sight is up near the handguard.

Look into a CZ 527 carbine. You can get them in 223,7.62x39 ( cheap ammo) and I think 22 hornet. I shot one in 7.62 and loved it. It's light and handy and can be used as a hunting rifle at short distances in a pinch. Also has a set trigger for accurate shots.

I like it but it's in the same boat as the others, front sight way up by the handguard.

Instead of a rifle made to be scoped and has iron backups, I want something that had iron sights but can be scoped. Does that make sense?

If you weren't stuck on it being a centerfire, I'd say .17 HMR. However, you probably want to reload so in that case I'll say .243 Winchester because you can stretch that out further than 300 yards. I know Ruger makes an American in left handed models and in .243 Win.

FS CZ 527 MANNLICHER .223CAL WITH M1 CONVERSION + XTRA MAGS-SLING

I thought about a .17 but I want something a tad bigger. I'm leaning towards the .223 or .243 but I'm not set on anything caliber wise yet.

Wah that's a pretty gun. Same thing as the others though, front sight way forward.

I just watched a video of a Williams peep on a 10/22. Gonna dive into that a bit more. Also caught mention of a peep that can be mounted on a scope rail. If either is a good option that opens up quite a bit. Especially if I'm willing to have the barrel drilled and tapped for a front sight.

Those are cool little guns. I'm assuming by the size of that scope it's fairly accurate. How does something like that stack up against a bolt gun?

It's a Weaver V16 (4-16x) scope. They say these single shots are not as accurate as a bolt gun, this thing is far more accurate than I am and more so than 12 or 14 of my other rifles. This and my Rossi 62 gallery gun are my fun guns.

+1 for the CZ-527

You could get either the .223 version or the 7.62x39mm version. I'd personally go that route but sounds like you might be better served by the weaker .223 version.

If I can find out for sure I can add a peep to the cz that's going to open another can of worms as well. I've got a norinco SKS I never shoot but because I inherited it I won't sell. If I reload x39 and throw a set of tech sights on that it just might get put back into rotation. I'll be seeing ballistics tables in my sleep before this is over.
