I want to get a rifle for this amount. It will be used for targets and occasional coyote. Possibility of a hog hunt. These are the options that I have found.
1.) New Remington 700 vtr camo 308 $625 otd.
2.) New Browning a-bolt ii medallion 22-250 (beautiful) $705 otd.
3.) Used like new Browning x-bolt 308 with leupold 3-9×40 mounted. $748 otd.
4.) New Tikka t3 hunter (wood) 260rem. $680 otd.
Keep in mind I need a Leupold base and rings as well as some kind of scope on whatever I get. Only have $800 to spend. What would you guys do?

Im thinking #3 sounds like a winner, it is ready to go,and .308 ought to work on hogs the 22/250 would be kind of light for them . Just my thoughts others will probably know more and have different opinions

Number 3 is a nice ready to go set-up, but it's the all black stalker with sorter barrel. I shouldn't have mentioned hogs, I would probably use my 45-70 or Bisley on those. Mainly just a plinker/investment until I sell it for something else.

Savage axis .308 @$250-300, depending on area and sales.

Leupold bases and rings. @$70 at Midway.

Leupold VX-3, 2.5-8x, $399 at Midway.

Google how to mod the trigger spring. Improves the trigger.

I constantly see posts like this and guys at gunshops say "I have X amount to spend" , and someone will steer them towards a gun that costs X-$50, that leave no room for a scope, and it is better to put a $1000 scope on a $50 gun, than the other way around. (Yes, it's an exaggeration, but it makes the point.)

Didn't see the x-bolt had a Leupold. That is a good deal. #3's your winner.

Don't buy cheap. If you were my friend and told me you bought an Axis, I'd slap you and take you back to the store for a refund. Buy quality at a cheap price.

Lurk on gun broker a bit, check out grabagun.com look for a steal at your local. My dream job would be finding the "get an Axis/770/cheap-crap-crowd" and hitting them in the face with a porcupine.

There are great deals to be had if you can find yourself the patience; but please don't buy an axis.

I wouldn't buy an axis. I own several guns and have had several nice rifles in the past. I'm just looking for something to have. I think that new vtr can be outfitted with a nikon for right at $800, so I'm sort of leaning that way. The medallion would appreciate better than the others so I like it also.

Shop around for a used 22-250, should be able to come in under 500 for the rifle. Plenty of decent scope and rings that can come in under 300. Patience is key. If not patience? Pick what you will but target and some coyote? Pick a caliber and shop for the deal you want.

I would go with Option Number 3 as well. For the money it seems like it fits your want list and already has a decent scope on it.

I had a browning A-bolt medallion, and have a old remington 700. they are both excellent rifles, but I see no one is picking the 700. I thought that would be more popular over the browning.

Is there anything wrong with the 700 vtr and its odd shaped barrel?

Choice 2 is the best rifle of that bunch. Remington shouldn't be on the list of nice rifles.

WOW! 15 replies and no one has suggested an AR!

A few years ago a coworker bought a Tikka in .308 and brought it to my house to sight it in. Whether shooting factory or handloads the rifle was incrediby accurate easily grouping .5 moa and under @ 100 yds.

Good luck with your choice.

Sounds like the OP wants bolt action, otherwise the AR platform darn good choice. In this case, #3 is the best choice. Of course, check everything out first to make sure it's not shot-out.

As a matter of fact I have an AR for sale. I think I can get $800 out of it which is what my budget is based on. I just miss having a nice rifle that can hit everything from a good distance. Miss my bolt guns.

I hear ya on the bolt guns, they've always been my favorite as well. Out of your options I'd probably opt for the x-bolt, my Stainless Stalker is a great and consistent shooter especially for being as light and handy as it is. I would also look at other Tikkas than the .260 Forrest unless you really want the caliber. You can find them in more common calibers and configurations for cheaper usually... It's not really the best time of year for getting hunting rifle deals, but it wasn't too long ago that Sportsmans Warehouse had a sale on T3 lites for under $500.

Sounds like most of you would buy the used browning stalker. Honestly I think it is #2 on my list. The one I'm leaning towards is the VTR. It is new and if I go over budget about $50 I can have base and rings as well as a Nikon prostaff 4-12x40 mounted on it. The leupold looks like a rifleman and is a 3-9x40.

I would take the $800 in cash, go to a gun show and find a deal there that may or may not be on your list already.

Last year I picked up a Sako L579 in 22-250 for $550 with a wood stock, glass-bedded, no optics but had 2 piece weaver bases.

Really? I rather like mine. Here's what it can do, and this with loads I made for a different rifle, while sighting in my scope. Mine is a .223-

The second group up in the top pic is .14", centers measured with a mic. the lower right group in the bottom pic is .25". Granted, these are at 25 yards, as I sight in using the point-blank method, but considering I haven't started to load for this rifle yet, nor done the trigger spring mod, I'm feeling pretty good about it. The fact my son took 11 deer with his .223 Axis last fall was a deciding factor in my getting one. His shots were at ranges from 10 to 225 yards, didn't have to track any of them. While the Axis is not a pretty gun, I'm convinced of the accuracy and value.

Fantastic, Entropy, golf clap and everything. 25 yards is a hell of a long way out. How many rounds will it shoot like that? 500? 1k?

What about cost considerations for parts or general use repairs? What if OP wanted to upgrade components later, what then?

Edit: Also, please consider that any gaps in hole placement will be 4 times larger at 100 yards by your method. 25 yards gets you on paper but you can't really see the spread until at least 100yrds.

Post edit: I'm not trying to come off as some sort of elitist jerk. An axis is fine if you put down a box of cor-lokts per year but I don't think that's what OP is looking for.
