I've had my 870 Police Magnum for about 9 mo now.
Occasionally I take it to the range to blow holes in the dirt and keep up with my familiarization of how it works.
Then I shoot my pistols and then the rifles then go home.
No big deal, the 870 goes back to bed room defence duty and that's all I ever expected it to do.
Well last weekend my wife went along to the range, with the intent of me showing her how to operate the 870 and send a few rounds down range her self. Which she did and now feels more comfortable with the 870.
While we were driving in to the range, a lot of people were driving out. Just missed what ever they were doing.... bummer.
Grabbed the 870 went to the trap side of the range, and noticed that the house was open and a few "old duffs" were still sitting around chewing the fat. (that's what we missed - a trap shoot for fun not score)
We (wife and I) start working with the 870 and typical gun club the "duffs" start circling closer, and finally ask if they can assist in anything, then with out waiting for a reply start helping my wife with her hold and stance.
It all went well, and after she had her fill of shooting, they asked me if I'd like to try some trap?
Well sure, but it's an 18" barrel and I have never really thought about trying it with such a small purpose built defence gun.
They said no problems, it can be done. So they let me use the 16 yard (closest to the house) line and start tossing them. I did OK, got some pointers and started doing better.
Well just as soon as the guys in the club house heard the car-umph of rounds going down range, more filed out of the house to see who was on the trap range. Well next thing I know there are 6 of us shooting and 3 people helping me with my little 870.
I can't think of a better time I've had on a range in years. I was invited back last night for the Wed night trap shoot, me and my little 870 did well thank you very much.
With some guidance (thank you Kenny) I shot a 19/25, then 21/25, 24/25 and a 20/25 all at the 16 yard line last night.
I consider it not too shabby for never shot any clays before. The guys were quite pleased with my performance and the 870.
I now have an open invite to the Wed night shoots and am looking forward to the sporting clay shoot on the 15th, another thing I never thought I'd do with a defence gun.
MORAL of the story (if there is one)
Go Shoot! It's FUN! You make friends and learn things. Don;t be afraid that you have a defence gun or that you don't have a $2,000 trap/clay specific gun. Buy a box of ammo and go have fun. You'll not regret it, I'm hooked.
