My model is the 44 US (a) version.

Where can I get either some peep sights for this gun ot a better scope mount? It came with a 3/4" scope but I either want to get some original style sights or a 1" scope.

My mag has the hole for putting a screw in so you can shoot .22 shorts, where can I find the screw?

Does it have a rear sight? Some have a Mossberg rear sight, but the majority have a Lyman rear sight that's still in production. I think it's 41A.
Here's what they look like.

The front sight is just a post. A lot of people drive out the dovetail and put in a Lyman hooded front sight.

There is also a side mount available for a scope.

The best place for information is probably the military .22 forum at www.milsurpshooter.net. You'll find a number of old threads discussing the details.

Here's a useful FAQ, including sight info:

Havlinsales.com has most parts, and should have the screw you are looking for.

Brownells has begun to offer a side plate that will allow fitting of the Lyman MJT rimfire target apeture sight.
The front sight dovetail is a standard 3/8" and you can use any hooded front sight with that dovetail dimension. HTH.

VG,
That is a nice stock. Did you refinish it or is that how it came?

My stock is a little dull but in perfect conditon. Do you think it would be a mistake to give it a couple coats of tung oil or should I keep the original patena on it? I like the fact that it has not been refinished in it's life so maybe I should keep it the way it is.

That's personal preference. The stock shown was purchased new and finished with Minwax Tung Oil Finish - a commercial blend like most. I may have the original stock or I may have sold it, don't remember. I like natural color Birch on a blued rifle, but others do not. This rifle is still in use and I don't think they'll have any great value in the future.

The other stocks were as delivered by CMP. The 44US stocks are usually Birch that have been stained closer to the color of Walnut.

The only other change is the replacement of the plastic trigger guard with a CNC machined aluminum replacement, which makes the rifle feel a lot better.

Havlin sales now sells an adapter for a weaver base that screws on where the old scopemounts go. This will allow use of 1" tube scopes on these old guns. Grea quality mount. I ordered two of them.
