I bought a Taurus 817, new in the box on-line without seeing it first. Its a 38special (+P rated), built on the "Tracker" frame, and Taurus refers to it as a "compact" size. It holds 7 rounds,I got the stainless/gray finish, and it came with the "ribber" grips. Its aluminum alloy, and stainless steel, pretty much the same configuration as a S&W "airweight".

Overall the gun is pretty nice, it locks up very tight, in full lock up the cylinder does not budge at forward-backward. It does move just slightly side-to-side, but I do mean just barely. As a matter of fact, it locks up tighter than my new GP100. It does have a few minor "rough" spots in the finish, so its not as nice to look at as a Smith & Wesson, but for $325 shipped its not a bad deal.

I tried to show in the pics the rough spots on the cylinder "charge hole side" and the corresponding marks on the gun located on the frame, where the cylinder locks in. It looks fairly "beat-up", like it wasn't fitted properly at first maybe? The trigger pull is decent, its on the heavy side, but fairly smooth. I need to get another snap cap set though (I only have 6) so I can dry fire it some. I have yet to take it to the range, but I plan on doing it soon. I'm glad it locks up well, and the timing appears fine. As long as it shoots reliably, those rough spots won't bother me.

I also order some grips from Hogue for this gun, as I don't like the "ribber" ones it came with, although they look/feel like they would do a good job with recoil. But they just feel to squishy, and they also feel bulky. The other grips Taurus offers still cover the backstrap and give you a spot for your pinky just like the Hogues do, but I like Hogues better. I just with the gun came with only a two-finger grip allowing your pinky to hand underneath the grip. But when I removed the grip, there is more material, and the gun was just designed to give you more to hold on to. Which I think is kind of dumb seeing as it has a 2" barrel, but I guess they use the same frame for longer barrelled models as well, :( I just would rather have more compact grips, its not like recoil is going to be that bad out of a gun that weighs 21 oz with shooting 38+P's. I'll post again after I shoot it.

Nice find at a good price.

I wouldn't worry too much about the larger grip frame, it'll still conceal very nicely from the looks of it. Be sure and give us a range report.

Also, I just recently picked up a Taurus 650 J frame magnum....I love it, and didn't expect to. Taurus is making some great wheelies.

I'm thinking about a 7 shooter myself. The Taurus 7 shooters are closer in size to the S&W K-frames than the 7 shot L-frames so definately better for CCW. I like the idea of the 817, and I'm also considering the steel framed .357mag 617, though on that size frame (no good for pocket carry) I think I'd prefer a longer barrel. I prefer a 3" on that sized frame, but Taurus doesn't make one. I may go with the 4" Tracker and either live with the 4" or cut it to 3". Still, there is a good chance I'll go with the 2" 617 or 817 myself.

Please keep us updated on how this gun does.

Very nice, I just bought a blued Taurus 617 (same thing but .357) online, infact I'm sending payment out tomorrow for it, we'll definately need a range report!

I bought a Taurus 617B late last year. Blue steel, .357magnum, 2" barrel. For a .357, it shoots .38 special pretty well. ;) I'd recommend getting the Ribber grips before shooting full power magnum loads though. Magnums can be brutal in this revolver. But I still managed to get all 7 shots on the silhouette at 7 yards. Accuracy was a lot better with .38 Special +P ammo, and more managable too. I used 125 grain JHP Corbon ammo, as well as Winchester in the same weight and type. The Magnum ammo was also 125 grain JHP.

For me, it makes an excellent backup weapon, and it is not too heavy, nor too bulky for pocket carry. And it certainly beats the hell out of carrying a .380 for backup!

My one comment is, I would NEVER buy this in Titanium.

If all you're gonna do is carry it, fine, buy it in Titanium. But if you intend to shoot it a lot, either get a good pair of shooting gloves, or grips or something. The Titanium version kicks worst of any gun I've ever fired. Including a .454 Casull.

My Hogue grips came in the mail today. They feel a lot better to me than the "ribber" ones it came with. Now I need to get it to the range, and see how it functions. Also need to buy some of the Speer GD 135gr+P for it as well.

If it functions without any problems, then I'm going to look into getting the hammer bobbed, front sight insert, and maybe an action job. But I don't want to spend the money on that till I'm sure its a reliable gun foremost, and that I can shoot it well. Its my first Taurus also.
